Best Treatment to use on plastic splitter to make it black again?

Post by Danbob »

My Front splitter (Rev2 Turbo) is looking very grey. Is there any one product that people recommend to give it a refresh, back to black, bumpercare etc? What is the best?
Cheers"

all those spray on bumper things last a few days.

Im sure you'll find the splitter is painted so T-cut it or mop it. Failing that spray paint it

Spray it.. even if you did it with rattle cans and took your time you'd get a decent finish..

Plus spraying is fun

If its the same material as plastic bumpers you can use a heatgun to get get the color back

Apparently rubbing oil into it helps too?!

The correct way to fix this is either a hair dryer or heat gun, be careful with heat gun though, you could easily burn the plasic.

These processes will bring the black trim back to as good as new if done properly.

I am a Professional Valeter and (current fashionable word) Detailer and do these as part of my profession day in, day out. Don't waste your time with stupid products that don't last. A trim dressing can be used though to keep the plastic looking good.

Cheers, Michael.

Yep, try it.

I'd be wary of burning/marking using the heat approach, I'm sure it's fine if done properly.

spraying is the only way, wet and dry prime fine wet and dry more primer first layer of paint, fine wet and dry, second layer, fine wet and dry, finaly clear coat. always fine wet and dry after every coat including the final coat of paint but dont go mad, just enuf to flatten the paint

I'd reccomend spraying too. Have you thought about colour coding it with the body? Either way if you do the prep well and wet and dry properly and take you time spraying you can get a very good finish. I just touched up many black panels on mine with some tins and am very pleased with all the spray results.
Good luck with what ever you choose

And that peanut butter trick is wicked, although when selling would you have to declare that it contains nuts???

I do have some MR2 black paint in the garage, might give it a go, my compressor needs a rebuild though so will have to wait until I get that sorted, could take the opportunity to touch up a couple of other places aswell!

if you want to bring the black back without painting, try GTECHNIQ C4. not cheap but amazing stuff.

Sounds a good cheap alternative, going to have a go with a hairdryer and then try some peanut butter or Linseed oil next weekend, if that doesn't work then I'll get it resprayed when it comes off the road for winter

Cheers
