[Mk2] [Turbo] Upping my boost

Post by Luke820 »

Iv got a rev 2 Turbo about 80k miles iv just bought a mines ecu was wondering if the ecu would handle turning the boost up a bit only to about 12 maybe 14 psi I have ct 26 standard injectors and head gasket.

Turn it up to 12 if you are on a stock intercooler.

15psi is about the limit before other supporting mods.

Go for it, turns the car into a monster!

I think standard intercooler would be ok at 1 bar, aslong as u got free flowing air filter and decat, only thing stopping you now is that paper headgasket!
Id gamble at 15psi but thats me, if headgasket goes its an excuse to put a rev3 gasket on

I have a blitz nur spec straight through decat blitz or hks air filter uprated intercooler not sure on the make dosnt upping the boost cause problems without the right map melting pistons ect or is that only when u turn the boost up loads? And I wouldn't like to pay out for a head gasket as its a pig of a job on this car anyone got an idea of what a headgasket + labour costs?

stick to 0.9 if your worrying about the headgasket....

I would fit a uprated headgasket, IC, Filter, Exhaust, Decat then turn up to 1.1bar

Headgasket change would probably cost you about 500 find a mr2 specialist in your area and give them a ring isnt pacific works near you?
I ran my old car at 17psi for about 18 months before headgasket went then put a cometic headgasket on.

We will see if it isn't then we go find some country lanes and see who's quicker?

How about a fuelling when the boost is more than stock?
Shouldn't engine get more fuel when it gets more boost? Or is it fine without adjustments?

Stock MR2 turbos run at around 10:1 a/f. Pig rich for safety and longevity of the engine. When you wind more boost in, you use that extra fuel up and make more power due to the extra boost, and the slightly leaner mixture.

So no adjustments are needed?

Depends how far you go. You will need a fcd or disable the fuel cut if you have a gen2 engine.

IMO 1 bar on pump fuel with bolt ons is acceptable.

Yes, I know about an FCD. Going to ~1bar with air filter, exhaust, IC, metal HG and arp bolts.

I have the same mods as you give or take.... Mines ecu's are mapped to 1.2bar iirr.
I'm running 1.05bar (ct20b) with my mines ecu and afr's are still quite rich after about 5000rpm (10.7 to 10.4).
If your really want to be sure everythings a ok, pop along to your nearest RR and do a power run to see if your afr's are ok :thumleft:

One thing I will mention, I just fitted 50/50 water/methanol injection to keep the engine safe from det, raise octane and lower inlet temps.
I picked up a good amount of hp from this mod and dropped inlet temp on boost from 50c to 25c and lower  . I think quite a bit of the extra power came from the mines ecu, as there mapped for jap fuel which has a much higher octaine than say vpower.

Just a thought, best of luck :thumleft:

Maybe. Since you have a '93 you might have the 16psi cut. Otherwise its at around 12.5psi.
