Hi everyone :)

Post by GTKatie »

I'm Katie, I have an MR2 GT Turbo
Love my car to bits and can't wait for some proper summer weather so I can take my roof off! :)
I have an embarrassing problem at the minute, (with the car!)
It keeps putting out puffs of smoke at traffic lights or junctions when I'm not moving?
Any ideas guys?

I hope it's not the turbo seals, it's just been rebuilt!
I've put a Pic on my avatar but it's not showing yet.
It's also started making a funny noise like it's missing when using the engine to slow down, not when accelerating though :-/
Smells more like fuel than oil coming out of the exhaust.

Hi Katie,
I have something similar, it comes and goes.
After some googling it seems like valve stem seals could be the cause, might be running rich too if you smell fuel.

You say the turbo was recently rebuilt?

Then it would leave me to believe it has not been primed properly. Or badly rebuilt.

How long ago was it changed? And when did it start smoking?

Well, the turbo was rebuilt not long ago and just fitted.
The engine over heated due to a water pump failure and I had the pump and turbo fitted at the same time, made sense to get a few jobs done together.
I'm now worried that when it overheated it damaged something.
Only ever smokes when there is no accelerator pedal action.
I've started flicking the pedal at the lights to stop it smoking as it's getting embarrassing :-/

wont be valve stem seals as they tend to make it smoke on start up.

You'll find its definatly the turbo seals that have gone. I had this happen to me and just hets worse till you have a smoke screen behind you LOL

I found this out when me Blitz turbo gave up on me :-(
