I`m in the process of fitting new pads and brake hoses, the front went fine but when starting on the rear i found the drivers side wouldn't wind in and when operating the spring loaded arm the piston kept protruding more and move until i decided to call it a day. The passenger side doesn't wind in either but does pops in and out when you operate the spring loaded arm.
I`m i doing something wrong?
I used a G clamp to wind the fronts in which worked fine.

Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
um the rears are on a thread so you need to wind them back in. You can use needle nose pliers or an open ended spanner to do it
Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
Are you actually winding it in or just pushing it in Matt? They need to literally be screwed into the caliper, you can use a pair of pliers in the cut outs of the piston to rotate it or get a caliper wind in tool (worth the pennies IMO).

Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
from the pictures it appears you are winding them in, marks on the piston.
You may have seized calipers if they wont go in any further. very common.

Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
I`m trying to push them in
So winding them in means rotating them clockwise, what a sausage i am!
But why does the drivers side calliper keep pushing out more and more and the passenger side just pops in and out?

Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
well the spring loaded arm is the handbrake lever so it will operate the piston if you er action it. As to why they dont wind in, I had this on mine and the caliper were fubar'd and off to Sbits I went..
Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
I changed the bk 1s on my 93 with a spanner and a screw driver. It was a bit stiff but loaded with wd40 it went in
Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
Don't forget if you wind them in you need to wind them out about 1.5 turns (others please check) as otherwise the handbreak won't work. Lots of discussions on this in the past.
It's something to do with the internal mechanism of the handbrake at the back of the caliper. I don't really know the specifics but it is essential you wind them out a bit as well.
Good luck Geoff

WD40 on your brake piston seals
You'll probably be looking at a seal replacement kit soon...WD40 attacks the rubber the seals are made from.
Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
One of these makes life easier if they are a but stiff. It's an annual job on mine greasing the calipers. Only trouble is I can never find this in my tool box and have just bought a third one in as many years.
Much cheaper than some of the elaborate contraptions which do the same thing.

Can of worms comes to mind!

Re: Winding In Rear Calliper Pistons
Fully wind them in, then unwind 180 degrees in order to make the handbrake perfect working.
Have fun
