[Mk2] [Turbo] Brake caliper refurb

Post by 2mad »

My passenger side front caliper has started dragging :( .
So I thought I would give them both a refurb.
Is this the right kit for the later type rev2+ brake calipers . . .

Will I need any special tools to do the refurb, also any hints a tips for doing the job would be much much appreciated :)

Refurbishing the front calipers is a relatively straight forward job. You just need to be careful that you don't scratch/mark the "front" of the pistons (ie the part nearest the pads/seals) when cleaning them. Other than that it's just a case of stripping down, cleaning, replacing the seals and rebuilding them.

The pistons can sometimes be a bu88er to get out though, if that's what's causing the caliper to stick. Are you sure it's the pistons and not the sliders though? If you remove the suspect caliper from its mounting frame, you should then be able to move the frame back and forth. If you can't then it's the sliders that have seized (more common tbh).

Hi Slarty, Yep pretty sure its one of the pistons, the rubber boot thing has split. I guess contaminants have got in there.

Do you know if this ebay kit is right :-k

Ok, just didn't want you doing a fair bit of work for 2 minutes of checking!

That looks to be the right kit but I'm sure someone else will confirm one way or the other :)

EDIT! the below only counts if you have already upgraded to rev2+ brakes. if you have rev1 then disregard the below.

i honestly would not bother with that.
For £49 you can get these:

the remember there's a rebate of £15 which you get back per caliper.

Ive had 2 off them, perfect.
