Surely with older cars you pretty much always need to get the paint matched and mixed. Had this done with my AE86, didn't think it was overly expensive tbh.

You're so good to your cars Lauren

You always buy them the very best :)

Ah. :) Well, tbh, Peter, I've learnt the hard way how not to do things in my younger years, so thesedays if I can't afford something, I just wait till I can. I think with my current car, it's a car that I want to keep for a very long time, so only the best will do. :+:

Quick update.

I went to have a look at the car today. It was quite poor and needed a lot of work....more than i'm capable of anyway!

Drivers arch rotten and needs replacing, rear passanger panel needs welding or replacing. The worst part was when i lifted the carpet in the passanger footwell and found some small holes. I stopped then and didn't even get under her. It's also been sitting up for the last 7 months and the brakes were none existant.
I'm glad I went to look at it though, it was an experience! I haven't seeen one in the flesh for a long time and they're a beautiful car! Want one even more now!!

Thanks for all the advice, i'll be back soon when I look around some more!

Always good to go and look at a few and see what you don't want. Unfortunately rust is a big issue now and you need to be really careful to ensure you buy a sound car.

Good luck!

when buying one of these i would really recommend biding your time and picking a good one. I looked at a few before picking the one i wanted (i know the engine has now blown up but meh) and i think i found a good shell i am very happy with!

It's a lot easier to replace the engine than trying to sort bad rust. Theyre so rare here it might take me a while to find a decent one within my budget!

Oh btw, got some shock with the lack of power steering lol!

Yeah i agree, although i wouldn't wish either rust or broken engines on anybody.
Not having owned a car with power steering, but i have driven them, i prefer none p/s while driving, but i agree it is a disadvantage while parking. Its not too bad in the mr2 with the weight over the rear though.

Parking a MK1 is a doddle unless you are a wimp?!

I haven't owned a PAS car before but the ones I've driven just feel so lifeless. Cannot feel the road at all.

Putting your engine in will beef you up mate. I'll be doing mine without a ramp.

haha im kidding lol ive done alot worse than putting an engine in on a ramp, its so easy hardly any fannying around. just put 4 tyres under the car, undo all the conections, get 1 person to snad on the engine and send the ramp up. simples!

Mk1 drives absloutely fine without power steering

Provided that tyres are inflated to correct pressures

On t'other hand a modern car with big heavy front engine is undriveable without

That looks nice actually. I think its the quality of the photo but it looks like original two tone white over graphite grey

Definitely not original colour.

Looks okay, just remember to do all the usual checks. :+:

Yeah, I thought that and can't find a mk1 original colour guide with pictures I found a while ago! It's a bit modified looking looking for me, I'm looking for a more original car...

Actually while i'm at it, here's all the mk1's for sale in Ireland at the moment....opinions welcome!!

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/2886611 - looks pretty rough

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/3219203 - looks really nice but its in northern ireland and to register it here would be +€900 so over my budget of <2k

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/3220960 - again looks clean but over budget with registration

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/3300308 - looks rough and poorly resprayed...and a dreamer at that price. Look at the poor white one in the background!! :(

The 1984 car (that has been ruined by adding sideskirts and colour coding), could be nice if you returned it back to the original black/red colour scheme.

Hmm. Not sure why that would be. Are you registered on the mk1 club forum? It's just in the projects section on there :)
