[Mk2] [NA] Air Box Drilling
im looking to add some performance to my car, but keep it looking standard to the insurance company. so i have a few ideas like hollowing out the origional cat and fitting it back on. also drilling the air box and fitting a panel filter into the origional airbox. was just wondering if anyone had tried these or have any other ideas?
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Air Box Drilling
who are you insured with?
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Air Box Drilling
Having done both panels on my sr20and 2zz and then upgraded to cones on both id say just go straight to cone filter and declare it as a mod.
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Air Box Drilling
Agreed, just get yourself a decent induction kit and declare.
As for de-cat, depends on whether your car requires one for the MOT..
MR2 N/A's from August '92 required a CAT for the MOT.

I'm not insured on it at the moment, I'm putting it on the road in October when i will be 21, I don't want to declare because as a 21 year old on an mr2 insurance is rather high to say the least.

What age is the car?...
Other thing is, the insurance company won't come round and look at your car, however if you have an accident and it goes in the garage will and your mods will be rumbled anyway, so doing the secret mods just same as doing regular mods and not declaring anyway.
Why not insure it stock and when you get the price ask what difference it would be if you did the induction mod, might only be a few quid then you can do it if you want...

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Air Box Drilling
you might find its better to have simple mods on your insurance. some specialist companies witll only insure cars with mods and for cars like ours they tend to give the best quotes
i had to lie and say my punto had an air filter on once because they wouldn't insure me without mods lol.
i dont know how i have managed it but im 22 with 4 years no claims and my insurance is just over a grand on a tubby with a full colour change coil overs boost controller after market bumpers etc. plust it would be much easier to buy a cone filter and just keep the standard air box incase you need to put it back to standard.

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Air Box Drilling
I'd just keep it standard until you can afford to insure modifications added to it etc.
It really isn't worth modding the car, such as drilling the air box, (which I wouldn't do anyway) and decatting the stock cat.
Best to keep straight with your insurance company.

+1 ^
If you can't afford to insure a modified car then you certainly can't afford to pay for someone else's car repairs and personal injury claim if your insurance gets pulled following a crash for not declaring mods
I'm a fan of standard or OEM+ unless your going all out
Selling up my highly modified and restored Rev 1 V6 3.0 1MZ-FE VVTi

Yep, I can't advise enough about telling the insurance company about any changes to your car from standard
Just be careful with a de-cat, as you'll have to refit the cat for an MOT if your car is a 92+ car.

Hiya fella and good luck with the car and I hope you'll have a lot of fun with it but if you mod anything declare it... not doing so is simply idiotic and if you hit me with invalid insurance trust me when I say I'd be coming after you personally.
R.
PS. They're great cars, aim to mod it gradually as you can afford to and hang on to it for a while. Most mods won't improve performance and the insurance companies recognise this but they also recognise the attitude behind such mods ...ie more speed or 'speedier' sound or look so mods do tend to have more effect on younger drivers policies. Before any mod check the insurance implications and work any extra premium into the cost before deciding whether it's affordable.
Enjoy it.
