Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
This has always been a gray area for me as I don't really understand. I have just bought a new set of Inovit STVI 17"x8" @ 114.3 and wondered if I need some?
The theory goes that spigot rings aid in placing the wheel perfectly central on the hub when the bore size of the alloy wheel is larger than the bore of the hub. http://www.performancealloys.com/spigot-ring-types.aspx
Arguably the tapered wheel nuts perform the job of centralising the wheel.
What is the centre bore of the wheels you've got?
Worth bearing in mind that if relying on the wheel nuts to centralise the wheel that you should do them up incrementally and jiggle the wheel before each successive tightening to ensure central fitment
The hubcentric ring in the centre of the hub is designed to take the weight of and locate the wheel perfectly.
The wheel nuts are merely there to secure the wheel to the hub.
So there should never be a gap between the ring on the hub and the bore of the wheel.
I wouldnt rely on tapered nuts to centralise the wheel on the hub. Spigot rings cost bu88er all and centralise the wheel perfectly on the hub.
If the wheel bore size is larger than 60.1, fit spigot rings. Simples.
I'll dig out the link I got mine from, they cost more but are metal and sprung, as Peter said they hold the weight, don't want to be trying to save £20 or £30 when it comes to keeping your wheels on...
It'll be printed on a sticker attached to the inside of the alloy. The Inovits I fitted to the MX5 are 73.1mm centre bore.
I was surprised at the quality of the inovit alloys actually - they are actually decently made alloys and the tyre fitter commented on how easily they balanced, not too heavy and well priced too
I would check with the manufacturer if its not printed on the wheel, tried measuring mine but in the end just rang OZ, better to get the right ones to start with.
Sorry on triple post too. Damn phone...
