One of the reasons the only piccy I go of it going up the hill was a snap shot (and the last on my reel) was that there was no announcement at all. It was a case of 'WTF it's the friggin Mk1 rally car!'

What a beast :!:

Shame that Toyota had most of them dismantled :(

Someone should build a "replica"

To be fair it would not be easy to build a replica. It would cost a fortune to do for very little return in value at the end of it. That's why I guess it hasn't happened.

Spot on! :thumleft:

I looked at this VERY seriously about 6 years ago and ditched the idea for EXACTLY this reason...!

Certainly wouldn't be easy Lauren

Probably impossible to build a like for like replica I should think

I can think of one or two folk who could probably have a fairly good shot at an approximate "replica" though

One would create massive excitement in the MR2 community I think

Paul isn't building his V8 as a money making exercise I think ?

Certainly not, that's being built because i'm obsessed with cramming very large engines into Mk1's and also someone said it couldn't be done, there's no way i'd build one for a customer but i suppose it does showcase what we can do at the extreme end of things.

A 222D replica is on my to do list one day but will more realistically be a retirement project so it can get 100% of my time. When i do eventually build one the panels will all have molds made for them but i doubt anyone will be that interested in 20 years.

I wouldn't be too sure about that, other than saving for a pension i'm saving £10 a year for an mr2 retirement fund but i'm not sure i'll be able to find a mk1 in 38 years time?

Alex i wouldn't start with a Mk1 if i was building a 222D rep, it would be all tube framed, built from scratch etc, i'd use only bare Mk1 components where needed, chassis harness, steering parts, that sort of thing.

Paul, just to be sure this happens...

Building a 222D replica can't be done!

[-X Please don't feed the animals :D

Seriously though i've always wanted to build one, not a Mk1 based on one but a proper replica with as much of the original copied as possible.

I think the biggest problem will be gathering info and details on how it was built and what parts were used so it can be faithfully reproduced. Just clagging 222D bodyparts onto a Mk1 chassis with an engine conversion would be very easy by comparison, sure it would look the part and perform well, but i'd want it to be a proper replica, so it would need building from scratch.

One day!

I'd be tempted to do that too, LOL. I've got enough drains on my money at the moment though. (Hopefully nobody tells me ever that one of these can be bought! House might get sold!!)

Im not sure on that.. I would hope it gets displayed as it rightly should do. Chris has some good photos of it in his photobucket album as earlier posted!
