[Mk2] [Generic] Slow windscreen wipers - FIXED, SEE UPDATE

Post by Peter C »

Gents,

What has caused my wipers to work slowly on all settings?

Battery is good and the system is charging. Everything else works ok.

Please help.

motor is needing replaceing.. mine was fine on slow and intermittent setting but if I switched to fast wipe , it would be slower than the slowest setting and then stop..
replaced motor and seems to have cured it..

It might not actually be the motor, it could well be the wheel boxes (the spindle unit that the wiper arm attaches to). I had one on my old ST205 GT4 all but seize up on me. I suspect that the MR2 ones are either the same, or virtually identicle.

On mine, the spindle had seized within its bushing. Was an easy enough job to strip out and free up with some WD40.

Got it, thanks for your reply psycho. As much as I appreciate your efforts, I have doubts that:

Motor is on the passenger side in the engine bay.

Dude,

I was mocking your reference to the wiper motor being located in the ENGINE BAY!

You got it mate!

The replacement motor arrived today. I'll be fitting it on Saturday.

Update:

I dismantled the scuttle panel to gain access to the wiper mechanism, which is needed to unbolt the wiper motor from the mechanism.

Image

With the wiper motor removed, it became obvious the replacement wasn't quite right. The plug was different. The original wiper motor is the one with the cables and plug hanging loose. The "22" and "23" lettering also gave the game away!

Image

Fortunately, I discovered that the cause of the problem was not a defective wiper motor but an almost seized wiper mechanism. I removed the entire mechanism.

Image

The pivot for the nearside wiper was almost completely seized.

Image

The repair involved securing the mechanism in a vice, clipping the mechanism together to prevent it from dangling about and getting in the way (I used green cable ties for this), spraying silicone fluid into the pivot joints (top and bottom) and turning the pivot both ways until it became free.

Image

Re-assembly was reverse of the dismantling procedure. Start to finish the job took approx 2 hours, which included time messing about and setting the wiper position. Job done, the wipers work a treat.

Anyone need a spare Revision 1/2 wiper motor? I've got one going cheap!

Nice fix and write up :thumleft:

My wipers toil a bit, as before i bought my 2 it'd been stood for some time. I'll check the joints tomorrow, as it's on the "to do" list
