Rear tie rod ends

Post by BIGBOBO »

Summer's over so it's time to replace some suspension parts and bushes on my car. I got nearly everything I need except for rear tie rod ends. I went to every auto parts store in town and all they could get where the front ones. Tried online but no luck either, ebay has nothing.

Does anyone know where I can get these? I rather not get them from mister T since I probably need my arms and legs to pay for the tube connected to the rear tie rod (mine are mangled and bend).

I could get them from twosRus but they ask 100$ to ship them to Belgium

Here's the part I need.

I've got one you can have if you pay postage. Not new but good usable condition.

The tubes are actually quite cheap (~£10 when I bought them) its the ends you need which aren't cheap #-o

Toyota.

The tubes are seperate from the clamps, so ideally you need 2 tubes 4 clamps

Thanks for the replies, I've contacted TCB parts and hope they can help me.

Thanks a lot for the offer Jiveman but I'll pass, I'm replacing pretty much everything with new parts.

TCB do have refurbished ones in stock but unfortunately they don't ship overseas :(.

Is there perhaps someone who could order 2 for me and send them over? (paid upfront)

Yes I got a mk1a.

That would be lovely :o .

IIRC a and b tie rod ends are interchangable (if you cut off a tiny bit)

Hi all.
Peter from Sbits has some rear tie bars in stock. (mk1a and mk1b) in stock.... £125 per pair including delivery by courier.

I think I am going to get some.
There is another bloke in the twobrutal forum wanting them ...
anybody from here ?
I could organize a group buy

In the meantime I have received some pictures of the SBITS tie rods

Tie bars are all stainless, and are full kits. Including new outer track rod ends, spherical inner bearings and spacers.

Could someone be very kind and patient and walk me through the process of checking for wear? In another thread would be best.

[just so you understand the background..]

With pictures, as am a complete numskull in this field. Plus am on continuous bucket loads of painkillers and other brain drugs that mean I need people to explain things slowly to me some days as it all becomes a tad fuzzy. Needless to say I'm not driving on those kind of days, but i'd like to keep busy reading on off days, and if I can get a bit better I can do some pottering about checking over my beautiful new toy, a mk1b.

Hi Cecil,

Looking at the picture above, the lefthand end is a ball joint. The vertical threaded rod you can see ends in a ball which can swivel in a socket. Over time, the movement of the ball in the socket (every time the rear wheel goes over a bump) causes wear, so the two parts of the joint can wobble about relative to each other. The right hand end is a rubber mounted bush or bearing. This is designed to give a certain degree of compliance, but the rubber perishes with age and use and gets too soft.

When either of these things happen, the rear wheel can wobble in and out (toe in and out) as you are driving, giving an unwanted and unpredictable rear wheel steer effect. Therefore, if you can use a prybar or something similar to wobble either end of this link while it is in place, it's probably causing some strange handling issues. I guess you could also check it by jacking the rear wheel and trying to to pull it (hard!) to see if it wobbles in the toe direction.

A more likely cause of replacement is that the three pieces of the bar (ball joint, tube, and rubber bush parts) are all rusted together in one big lump. This means that you can't adjust the rear toe if you have a wheel alignment done.

Hope that helps!

[@Adam_W thank you very much for your patience and thoroughly readable explanation. I have a degree in Theoretical Physics but that counts as nothing when set against the pharmaceutical might of the NHS! I shall endeavour to prevent wobblage. I'm signed up.

Many thanks once again.]
