[Mk2] [Turbo] Use the stalk for headlights instead of aftermarket switch?

Post by monkeyra »

One thing that's bugged me for ages on my tubby is the seperate switch which has been installed to select high and low beam. I'm guessing this is to meet UK regulations. I've now just re-wired it back to standard to see what the result would be:

1) Turn the lights on - nothing happens

2) Pull the stalk towards you (which would normally select high beam on a uk car) and it turns on the low beam headlights.

3) Pull the stalk towards you further (which in the uk would be to flash our high beams) and it also flashes the high beam.

There isn't a way to turn on high beam, hence the aftermarket switch. Can I rewire the stalk, or is the aftermarket switch the only one for jap cars to meet uk regs?

94 N/A import... Mine is turn handle, lights up. Low beam. Pull handle towards you, flash of high beam. Push handle away from you, permanent full beam.

Yeah mine is the same as Syn. Never heard of a totally seperate switch having to be used surely it should all be sorted and operated from the stalk, that would do my head in. The only thing on a switch is my foglights. Mine is also a rev1 1990 Import Turbo.

Yeah, they do that.

I can't see any other signs of previous owners fiddling, it's just this switch. Maybe Rev1 imports had a different light stalk than rev 2+ imports?

Am hoping mines a dead wire as it flashed when pulled, but pushed forward to where it should be (you can feel the stalk stay) you lose all lights bar side lights.

Scary the first time it happens and driving everywhere on dip beam get very tedious ](*,)

Hmmm, I may take a closer look at my stalk then, in case theres a stray wire. I can't see it being likely though, as it looks like a pretty sealed unit, but you never know!

Hi both

the lights shouldn't have a separate switch ,imports and UK work the same

theres a relay that controls the headlights ,in the front fuse box ,(number 5)

worth checking as well as the stalk

I also have a Rev1 Import Turbo and it has

Turn the stalk one stage, nothing happens
2 stages is slidelights
3 stages is dip
Push forward is Main
Pull back flashes Main

Also does anyone know what the 1st stage is? It keeps the lights lifted if they have been up, but does not lift them. Possibly some kind of bulb change/maintenance position

Exactly that. Also allows you to leave them up if Snowy/frosty so they don't damage the motors trying to force themselves :thumleft:
