Hi frank.
I did check belt tension seems fine and its only on start-up and initial idle for a few seconds from cold. Did this morning when i started to leave for work, but didn't when i called at the shops, and then after work from cold. Haven't put a volt meter over the battery to check what its like over a journey might mock a quick setup tomorrow night and observe on the way to work. When i operate some thing electrical windows for example when the car is idling the dashboard light dim a little but nothing too major. I was going to give the pulley on the inside a quick squirt with some WD.

Possible dry bearing at the pulley end of the jenny Alex ?

Not 100% sure Peter. Defintely sounds a metallic squeak though. i think a friend of mine has a spare alternator off his AE86 corrola 4AGE so might borrow that if it is a terminal problem.

WD40 is diesel based so it isn't that good for the rubber in the belt.
Also it is very penetrating while candle grease will make a thin layer.
I had the squeeling problem after restarting my engine when it was hot.
If you have it with a cold engine, could be what Peter suggest.

Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
candle grease? Not head that before. I think it could be a bearing as Peter suggested but surely wouldn't a bearing make a permanent noise? Wheels should be back from the coaters today at long last

Have known bearings behave just like you describe Alex
Is the belt adjustment OK ?
Peter
Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
The belt dosnt seem excessively tight or slack Perer haven't tried adjusting it or is it a self adjusting system?

Told you it was a 'jungle' solution!!

Its manual adjustment Alex
If it was me, think I'd try tweaking the adjustment up or down
See if it makes a difference
Also you could remove & examine the belt for any damage
Rub a little brake fluid into the sides perhaps ?
Peter
Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
belt is fine no cracks weak points or anything like that was replaced by the previous owner owner before i bought the car. Will have a look at how to adjust it this weekend!
Wheels are back from the powder coaters. They look good from a distance but they were quite pitted before they went and so close up you can see a few marks and such. Plan now is to polish up the outer's get some fresh rubber (still deciding on what tyres to use) save for some locking rays wheel nuts (£120!!! ) and then fit with the spacers in the summer. When these are fitted ill give the tear drops the same treatment, get the blasted and powdercoated!

Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
If it's the belt (which it sounds like) then it needs tensioned, the noise is almost certainly caused by the belt slipping on a pulley, usually due the belt being slightly loose and the increased load on the alternator trying to recharge the battery after a combination of sitting for a while / starting / drop in temperature.
One thing amazes me, two people on this thread have suggested adding a lubricant to the belt why ?
I can't see the reasoning in reducing the friction between the belt and the pulleys (making it easier for the belt to slip) when what you should be trying to do is increase the friction.

My suggestion is aimed at slightly softening the rubber to enable increased grip
However, if the belt is new then perhaps it was fitted by the previous owner cos he experienced simillar problems

Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
Personally when referring to a lubricant i was looking at spraying inside the alternator to try and lube up the bearing not to actually spray the belt itself. Where abouts is the tensioner?

Think two things are getting confused here Alex
1/ Possible dry bearing
2/ Possible belt slip
Previous owner replacing belt gives a clue. Perhaps he ran with a slack belt & polished the pulley. Then fitted a new belt, which cured the problem for a while & now its slipping again
Try tensioning a bit more to see if that stops it
As for the bearing, it is sealed so spraying WD into the jenny will only do harm not good
The adjuster is a slotted bracket bolted to the top of the jenny near the dipstick handle
Easiest to remove the coolant bottle to get at it
Peter

Cheers Peter will have a look at this at some point this weekend! Only really does it on start up so confused me a touch too.

Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
So friday evening driving hope from work in the dark i heard a loud bang. Thought it was jst a rock or something bounching off the bonnet or something and thought nuthing of it. On the way to work this morning noticed a crack crawling up the passenger side. On closer inspection looks like its come from a rock or somthing which must have been the bang.
Any ideas on prices for any windscreens and fitting? Anything that needs to be looked at while the glass is out or anything?

Re: PK_090'S Build/bodge and restore thread!
Cass had an Import (bronze tint) screen fitted to her Mk2 for £140 so I'd look at that kind of price from a local independant fitter, if you're not going through insewerants.
Things to look for? Only one really, the usual, rust.

I have similar problem Alex
Mine passed MOT early this year with a crack close to N/S (outside swept area)
Insurance companies seem to charge a standard excess of £75

Well im TPFT insurance so doubt windscreen is covered. Its in the D zone on the MOT test so not massively important i just dont want it to crack any more.

Could Autoglass or similar drill the end to stop the crack perhaps ?
