GT4 st205 Catalytic Converter suitable for rev3 MR2 turbo?

Post by hkwc104 »

My car ( a 1995 turbo) failed its MOT on emissions this morning due to not having a catalytic converter and therefore having CO2 readings of 0.60 at idle.

I'm therefore in dire need of a cat and wanted to double check that the cat from a GT4 st205 definitely fits a rev3 mr2. Is anyone able to confirm this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, they are the same part.

If your car says it was first used before 1st August 1995 on the V5 it doesn't need a CAT and should be tested to the older standards, which are CO <=3.5%. See http://www.motuk.co.uk/images/cat1.pdf (n.b. there is no 'exact match' for MR2 turbos in the 'in service' emissions book - if in doubt ask them to find chassis SW20 with engine 3S-GTE - it's not there).

For what it's worth my '94 rev3 turbo produced these figures with no cat after a decent service:

CO: 0.36%
HC: 64ppm

Cheers :thumleft:

According to the MOT tester my car is listed as being first used in Dec 1995 (not quite sure how accurate th eDVLA's records are on this though) so I think I'm out of luck with trying to get it through via the older standards.

I'm getting the car serviced in the next week or so but even with a best case scenario of say 0.36% for CO readings I still wouldn't pass the newer rules. Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and put a cat back on.

Try a different MOT station :thumleft:

Not a bad shout Marf.

I notice that you have a '95 tubby and are based in the neighbouring county. Any suggestions?

Yep luke is right, officially the cut off is August 95. Mine's a November 95. If you look on your VIN plate there should be the month/year of manufacture on in the form XX95 where XX is the month. Mine has 1195 stamped on it.
