Just bought a bargain non-runner MK2 Turbo! PICS ADDED!

Post by Danbob »

Hi, I'm Dan!

I've just done a very good deal on a MK2 Turbo which needs a little bit of work and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in!

I had some photo's to show but it won't let me post them :(

It's been sat as a non runner on someones drive for two years now, the cambelt went and the owner assumed the engine is knackered. I've read the 3s-GTE is a non-interference engine though so it may well just need a new cambelt lol.

But the engine had done 120K miles before the belt went, so I've decided to take it out and replace it with the 'spare engine' it comes with as shown in the pics, which reportedly was rebuilt 12k miles ago and has a Turbo technics hybrid turbo fitted. This work was carried out before the current owner got it though so who knows whether it's true??
I think the spare engine is probably the better bet anyway though!

Anyone got any good tips for the engine swap? Any handy tips or unnusual things to watch out for?
At the moment I just want to get the car running and on it's feet ready to be used in the summer so no V6's or V8's yet but I may be tempted in the future lol!

I've got access to an engine crane, I'm assuming once the engines dropped to the floor the car can be lifted up high enough using the rear chassis rails or something?

I also had some photo's of my first project which I've just reluctantly sold :(
It's a Mitsubishi Colt with a 200BHP 2.0 litre V6 transplant from an FTO:

But it won't let me post them either :(

Hope I can make a good contribution to the forum and I hope to get lots of good info here!

Dan

If you can get hold of a pallet truck, they make the job much easier :thumleft: (getting it our from under the car!)

But yes, drop the engine then jack the car up :thumleft:

I'm from Near Sunderland in the North East, But I'm now living in Cranfield, near to Milton Keynes!

Really looking forward to cracking on with the project now, going to take it slow as I'm just doing it on weekday nights outside my flat, so will have limited lighting and warmth, but I've got until summer to get it ready so should be finished in time!

Update!

Only a little one though, got myself a decent sized lockup and should be finally taking delivery of the car tomorrow!

Then will be stripping down the suspension/brakes to see what needs replacing, selling off some unwanted bits to fund some new parts and setting to work removing the old engine.

Still will only be doing the odd hour here and there so expect slow progress!

Pics to follow tomorrow night ! :thumleft:

Hi Dan! Welcome to the forum. I'm from MK here, so I'll hope to see it out and about!

Anyway, if you look in the events section, there's a fairly regular meet in Milton Keynes for IMOC members. I've only been to one, before my '2 was on the road, but I'm looking forward to visiting some more when my car is in a less shameful state and when I can get a Saturday off work \:D/

Ah right, I'll definately try and make it along to a few meets then. Mine won't be roadworthy until at least the summer though, needs a fair bit of work.

Managed to tow it to my lockup on my lunchbrake today, so will be having a good inspect of it tonight!

I'll get a few photo's to post up!
