PROJECT ROAD WEAPON HKS 2.2 RIP!!!

Post by Rob B »

I’ve been on here a while and spent a fortune on my car so I might as well get it on here.

I bought the car last year from member 3sgte and needless to say it was in a state although it had certainly had some money spent on it. It had made 442bhp in a previous life but those days were long gone when I got it. The bodywork was in a bad way and when I took it to 2bar Ryan it started to overheat on the dyno  . A sniffer test confirmed the engine was fooked. The problem could well have been there when I bought the car although everything seemed ok at the time looking back now the car and more to point seller didn’t add up. I’ll just have to learn from it and move on

Anyway at this point I faced the dilema of breaking the car or getting it to how I wanted it. The fact I writing this shows which decision I made.. In essence I wanted an Mr2 Turbo for years and this short and sour experience hadn’t scratched the itch so to speak. Besides the ornament on my driveway still contained some very good parts that I would want should I go and buy another.

Anyway....

The first issue to address was the bodywork. After handing over a big pile of notes to a body shop the visible rust had gone and some Toms kit added.

Image

Next came the thorney issue of the engine. The aim of my project was to have a very fast road mr2 with up to 500bhp. For these figures a forged engine had to be built. While planning and pricing the engine out of a certain wheelie popping mr2 came on sale so I couldn’t resist and snapped it up. The spec was a 2.2 HKS stroker with monster cams and a lot of custom work. Hopefully this will handle everything I throw at it. A 2.1 bar test drive at 700hp confirmed it worked.

Fitting the engine was relatively straight forward although the HKS unit uses a rev2 head and all my other stuff is rev3 plus. After speaking to ryan@2bar he suggested using a rev 3 inlet manifold on the rev 2 head. At this point (APRIL) the car was ready bar the inlet manifold who peter @Sbits said would get sorted as it should only be a few hours labour. God knows what’s happened as I still haven’t got it now nearly six months later and believe me when I say there has been a lot of chasing and even more excuses?????

Bodge job removed

New engine waiting

I took the decision to use a slightly modified rev2 inlet manifold/throttlebody as I think it should be fine for my power goals.....Plus I don’t appreciate being lied to and taken for a ride.

...........Meanwhile I treated the car to some new bits most of which are in my garage. I also got a nice new set of rims and r888 tyres...

Finally got the car running this week and its going to Ryan next week for mapping.

Its very very loud and the cams make for a very nice idle.

I want to thank Martin Kingston at MK tuning in Blackburn who has been a gem he turned a rough mr2 into something to be proud of. He generally specialises in celica GT4s but has well and truely popped his mr2 cherry with mine so I would recommend anyone using his service. Saying that he is well and truely sick of my car having been sat at his unit for nearly a year

I will be updating with the mapping progress and I have quite a few other bits to add but heres how it stands now..

Excellent read mate! I always wondered where the engine off that car went when he broke it! Good to see its still around! You have made my mind up about my car also wasnt sure on the toms kit in black was gonna have the car done white but not now!

Nice car, although if I were you I would refrain from slagging off other members and affiliates in public like you have. If you have an issue use trader feedback, not hidden in a build thread.

What ECU are you running with?

Are you still on the GT3076r and Radtech CC? Looking forwards to seeing how you do...

Thanks for the comments really appreciate it :thumleft: ,

Yes I'm still on the 3076r and radtec so we will see what happens. I'm abit worried about using the rev2 throttlebody but I think my 800 injectors will limit before this. I think rogue had member spudfromengland's red rev2 set up well over 500hp and in the 10s with standard inlet.

Ecu wise its on a power fc no snazzy motec just yet

I know where your coming from with certain comments. Just stating my experience good or bad with getting my car to where it is. I will get round to trader feedback I've got better things to do at the moment. But its there to read(not hidden). I'd rather not clog my thread up on this subject so please pm any issues or questions you have on that matter.

Mapping on wednesday with ryan. I'm looking forward to it just hope it all goes to plan.

Yeah I wanted upto 500hp(anything over 450hp and I'll be happy), after going in Roy Ashbys at 700 its too much for the road imo. That thing was shredding 255 road tyres he had to feed the power in slowly in third gear :D . Proper animal

If your sticking to the rev2 head I am sure there is a rmr inlet manifold on for sale section? Maybe of interest?

Thanks for the spot. Already thought about it but Ive spent too much on it recently. Plus my mappings booked, ive spent the last six months waiting on an inlet manifold missin all summer in the process. I dont want to wait another day.

The rev2 stuff should acheive my goals. Theres only one way to find out

Well bit of a disaster the turbo let go after 120miles of very steady driving

At 100 miles I text my mechanic to tell him how well its was driving/running

Didn't even get to the mapping

Plenty of smoke out the back and play with the shaft. Its the exhaust side.

These things happen so I suppose theres no point crying about it as its not gonna help. Just kicking myself as the turbo was out of the car just sitting there for ages and I was going to get it checked but the supplier said they never go wrong. Famous last words

So I'm at the tuned car cross roads not sure whether to break or repair. I'd love to repair and just get some quality usage out of it, afterall thats why I've got it not for all this stress and frustration. It just seems like its not meant to be with this thing. The engine still sounds sweet so as long as theres not issues on that front theres always hope.

For now its going into the garage while I have a long think and diagnose how its happend.

I'm not the first and I wont be the last for this sort of thing but its still a gutter.

The final resting place?? We shall have to see

That is a real shame mate! Personally i think as you have clearly put to much effort to give up now! Specially for a problem that isnt tooo bad! Just save to get it refurbed or get a new one!

Yep very annoying indeed. Deffo going to leave it in the garage for a bit but at the moment my thoughts are if the engine has to come out again it stays out.
