If your get quotes of £600-£700 to replace your head gasket on a N/A your going to the wrong place.

It only cost me £500 on a tubby and that was with a bit of extra work carried out as well.

But if it was me. I would probably throw the engine out and go for a more powerful Rev3. I can't believe i actually said a REV3 N/A is powerful LOL

My actual plan would be to put a tubby engine in it.

Hey, a 20 year old design pushing out 170hp~ish out of 2.0 NA is pretty powerful even by todays standards..

True, but my 20 year old E30 was pushing out the same. I found this ok to keep up with the majority of the run of the mill cars as long as you don't mind being kept up with by what i call a granddad car.......dare i say it a Rover

I have driven a REV3 N/A and my wife had a low mileage REV2 N/A and after going from a tubby into one of those it felt so boringly slow so much so i hated driving it as it gave off the wrong impression. It looks fast but alas it's slowwwwwwwwww Then you get every boy racer wanting to have a go at you but you daren't rise to it as you know that virtually every hot hatch would eat you for breakfast LOL

That is also very true. But where do you stop 300bhp, 400bhp, 500bhp? or is it when your wallet says, what the hell you think your doin or your gonads shrivel up in defeat

What is it with the NA bashing on here recently???
I thought we were all driving mr2s, as this is the international MR2 owners club after all! Just because we haven't got turbos that shouldn't take away from the fact that we ALL have freaking awesome cars.

If you want to race chavs in hatchbacks so be it. I wouldn't give them the time of day, let along spend thousands on my car just to beat them in a traffic light GP!

Back to the point: highwaystar, seriously, your 2 has got to be one of the best examples on here and it would be such a shame to see it broken up for parts. :(

Don't have my mr2 anymore but pop back here now and again.
I think you have made the right choice as your car is legendary (not just on this forum) would've been a shame not to hit the 1/4 million mark \:D/
Hope all goes well and everything is all good from now on and I hope to still be checking these forums out in a few more years time and still seeing the old girl going.

Just released this my 1st post On here was bit of a lurker when had my 2 but this forum was really useful as all questions I needed answers to had been done before and quick search or look in knowledge base and I had my answers!

Thx for the kind comments all. I like legendary.
My thinking is so long as it's fixed by the new HG that I'll still have something with new suspension and bushes, ex system and interior with a reasonable exterior and know the history of pretty much all the components. It's also of course just as I want it. No reason I shouldn't see another 3/4 yrs if the bodywork and block hold up... I hope.

I think it's great you are keeping it mate but I think you are mad for not just cutting your losses and putting in a low mileage later spec 3sge. I know your reasons, but I still think you are mad!

£500 for an hg on a turbo is silly cheap!

When we do them, it's nearly £500 before labour!

However there is a mandatory full head rebuild, cam belt and bearings, w pump, stat and full flush, add the gasket kit, head bolts, oil and filter and your there. If you're doing it, it should be done properly.

When we're done you'd never believe it would have done nearly 250k :thumleft:

Hmmm, I would still suggest to change engine.

I know it wont be original... but think of Takumi (Initial-D anime).
Stage 2, he finally lost a race when his engine blew on him. He cried and was sad because he felt it was his fault, but his dad told him it was nothing he did.

The engine had been at its end of life for a while, so it was bound to happen.

The idea of changing engine scared him as he felt it would not be the same car. And after the engine change, he complained a while of it not being as fast...

However, eventually he understood his new engine, and became an even greater legend.

Go be like Takumi! ;)

Respect to you mate  so glad it your 2 is going to be continuing, hit the 250K and get in touch with Toyota Press office or your local tv co

I am sure its worth a story, and just think of the extra history to the car

So pleased your carrying on, remember there is no cure for 2 ownership

Hopefully it's back tomorrow and I have to say I'm looking forward to it. We took the opportunity to do a bit of tidying, cleaning and err, tarting whilst Luke was at it so it should look pretty as well as actually work. Black with orange strips....
Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Oh and if all is good I think I might treat my already smoothed mirrors to a coat of silver paint in celebration. What do you think.. go with the rest of my silver detailing?
