CT20b vs CT26 Stage 3 Hybrid...

Post by Navz »

Hey guys,

I got a Standard Rev 3 Turbo engine with GReddy Intercooler, GReddy Profec B2 Boost controller, Departure 2 Exhaust and Blitz Air induction.

Just been offered a Stage 3 CT26 Hybrid made by Turbo Dynamics virtually brand new.

Wondering what the main advantages are? am i wrong in thinking it would be a step backwards to put a ct26 Hybrid on??

He said it is good for 1.5 bar of boost to 360bhp

any advice, thoughts would be appreciated.....

Hybrid CT26 will be comparable if not better than a CT20b, as long as it has a modified compressor housing... fensport does them and ATS makes them, called CT27, which are supposed to be a lot better than the CT26. Steel shaft is also a plus..If it's new I'd have a good think about it, also, if it's really a hybrid, it should have an engraved serial number, then you can call up the builder and find out what was exactly done to it..

Heard a few people say they wouldnt change a good ct26 for a 20b

so a hybrid can only be a good thing. :thumleft:

Looks like the compressor is bored out to accomodate a bigger wheel...

It'd be worth asking to have a look on the other side of the compressor housing to see if there's anything engraved on it. Turbo Technics does this when they do hybrid turbos (as far as I recall speaking to them on the phone).

Turbo technics glue an alloy plate on the actuator bkt.
The alloy plate is stamped and has TT written on it.
The first two figures are the year of manufacture.
I'm pretty sure the 148 uses a garret -31 actuator. My 175 definately does.

I always wanted the smaller hybrid 148, but ended up with the much larger 175. I think the 148 Hybrid will be much better than a std 20b, especially if running at 1.5bar.

when i asked a well known mr2 specialist about upgrading my ct26 to a ct20b i was told to stay away from the ct20b and to go for a stage 3 ct26 as they are much better and more reliable i.e no broken ceramic shafts to worry about.

My search for a stage 3 ct26 goes on :(

Take your turbo off and send it to turboforce.

They did one for me years ago and put a t04e compressor wheel in, loved it

I'm sure the celica ST205's came with steel shaft CT20b turbos.

Hybrid turbos do have their problem.

If it were me i'd just go with a CT20b turbo an easy 300+hp turbo

Everything comes with its problems, especially old turbos.

Im pretty sure they all have steel shafts, im not much into stock stuff anymore, im sure the issue was ceramic turbine wheels that like falling off.

Id go with a rebuilt turbo, at least you have a warrenty, mine was a great rebuild.

there has always been a bit of dodgy info around regarding this matter but i also beleive that to be true
turbos would not last very long at all if the shaft was ceramic
it is the blades that are ceramic on jdm turbos
uk celica - steel, jdm celica - ceramic
uk supra - steel, jdm supra - creamic
all jdm mr2 turbos - ceramic
mine is from a uk celica
