If there's no spring on it, how easy/hard should it be to depress the shaft? I take it it is a good sign if it pops straight back up?
Got some used yellow billies and trying to verify their condition.....
How easy/hard should it be to push a Yellow Bilstein damper in?

OK, got them all out properly. Two seem perfect, two seem to be working perfectly but have the tiniest film of fluid ont he bottom of the shafts. How long would these be likely to last and perform well??
Any ideas?

cant remember if mine where as easy to push in as pull out, but if you can pull them back out easily they are done, you would just be bouncing up and down on the springs otherwise

aren't the yellows gas struts and always return to the fully out position when released?

All dampers should do this.

On my rebuildables one goes in then out, the other goes in and stays in,buggerd me thinks.
I'm told that some dampers are one way and some are two way, ie in and out.

they all should be in/out - if they just go in, not out, you will be bouncing around like a madman on any bumps.

One way or two way adjustable. i.e bound and or rebound adjustable.

in answer to the OP's question all the shocks being the same should act the same with no leaks.
I also believe gas filled shocks return themselves to full extension whereas oil filled shocks do not since the spring in the suspension does that anyway. However, I also can't find anything solid to back that up so I could be talking pish

New shocks I bought for another car only damped on way out, not the inward stroke
