You really do need to give it one hell of a clean and degrease before you start.

I put a bead round the whole sump rim (why did I laugh typing that) then I used my finger to flatten it out a bit to ensure it all gets covered when it's bolted up.

Let it start to go tacky then I use a jack with some wood on to raise it up into place slowly then do opposite bolts.

Not had a leak yet on the 3sge, 3vz or... touch wood escort cvh.

Make sure to clean off all the old sealant really well on both mating surfaces. Also check the sump isn't bent, mine was and so left larger gap in one corner, easily rectified with piece of wood and a large hammer.
Then clean both mating surfaces with brake cleaner to remove any oily traces then bolt up to torque b4 the sealant sets. JD

I found (Loctite 5920 Premium Silicone Copper Gasket Maker/Sealant ) to be a good alternative to toyota's Black FIPG.

heres a halfords link..

The part of the sump on my car that was leaking was a bit bent out of shape, looked like someone had jammed a flat ended screwdriver between the sump and block to prise the sump off at some point.
I used a hammer and a block of wood to hammer the edge of the sump nice and flat.

Then basically did what Mr2_NA has posted, 1 year on still no sign of leakage :thumleft:
