[Mk2] [Turbo] Which tire sizes do you recommend?

Post by dellams »

I had a blow out the other day, which I barely survived! But anyway, since I need to replace the rear tire thought i'll double check which size you guys recommend?

At the moment I have 205/40/17 on the front and 215/45/17 on the back. My old 2 at different sizes to that. Their arrowspeed, they a good tire? Before I use to have T1R proxies, which ones are best?

Pressures should be 29 front and 33 rear as I recall?

Cheers.[/list]

Not too sure since aftermarket alloys were already fitted when I bought the car off here.

Maybe these pics on this thread may help?

nah need the wheel width and offset. Though I'd guess your mismatch on profiles wasn't a factor in the crash you really want the fronts larger or same size profile than the rears, not the other way round

ie 205 40 fronts and 225 40 rear but this depends on the width of the rims, Tyre choice is down to you, personal preference is massive with tyres.

How do I find out the wheel width and offset then?

I tried measuring the wheel with a tape measure so very rough estimate was about 8.5"and 215mm.

I tried looking for stamps on it but none looked like any sort of size. :(

Would 235 or 245 fit?

if the wheel isn't stamped on the outside it will be stamped on the inside. Depending on what it says yes 235 or 245 might fit but I would suspect you have same size wheels all round so 245 will be too wide

Yeah looked on the inside but couldnt see anything that looked like sizes, all it had were numerous different stamps which were:

on central hub area:
+47
02/12

Then different stamps round outside:

C133 Ja3 33

H 12 11 12

H 1214 108

73221 17X7JJ - may be model no?

Mean anything to anyone? :)

17X7JJ = 17 inch diameter, 7 inch wide.

Personally I'd not go any wider that a 215 on that. A 225 will start to "bulge" on the sidewalls, let alone a 235.

Which is not a bad thing, a) it provides an extra level of comfort and b) it allows the tyre to communicate to you how much load it's under when cornering, very useful on the rear of our cars I'm sure you can agree!

True, but you can also start to get excessive levels of sidewall flex which in turn dulls the feel of what the car is doing as well as heating the sidewalls.

Granted, but 225 on a 7 is fine, in fact a 225/50 is fine from 6-8J according to most manufacturers.

I have the A022 in 225/50 on a 6.5J wheel on the rear of my car. When you turn in hard you can feel the car first start to lean on the tyre, then you feel the car start to slide. It's progressive and communicative.

Ok thanks guys. Only problem is I already now have 235/40/17s on the back, is that going to cause a problem? They are the new Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 ones though so hopefully they can take the strain?

Its not dangerous having too much sidewall flex is it? Wont cause a blow out or anything like that? 8-[

As you decrease the profile for any given width tyre you should increase the rim width it sits on. I reckon your fronts wheels are OK but the rears ideally need to be wider by an inch... the wheel & tyre bible reckons a 7.5" min for a 225/40/17 though as others have stated wider tyres can be run but you probably won't ever hear from those with a bad experience of this since most likely they're not about anymore. Tyres are matched to rim sizes for a reason. When they're stretched on a wide rim the tyre wall is quite straight and so doesn't deform much under load (cornering) which helps steering response but adversely effects comfort. On a narrow rim the tyre is pinched which curves the sidewall. A curved sidewall will flex more thus exhibiting the opposite characteristics to the straight one.... Higher fuel consumption too.
I'd have an absolute max of the 225/40 on the rear and change the front to a 205/40 to keep what I think is the best handling tyre stagger of 20mm.
If you ever want to space them to make the rears sit as they should in relation to the fronts drop a 12mm spacer on. At the moment the facing side of your fronts sit further out than standard (about 10mm) whilst the rears sit 2mm further in (same 7" width as standard but with a 2mmm higher offset, 47 compared to 45).

Ok thanks guys. Yeah im getting the rears changed to 225/45/17 tomorrow, that should be fine though? They dont have any 225/40/17's.

I noticed the handling was a bit wobbly at speed, back kinda moving about a bit, feels really ropey in corners and not safe!

Hoping the 225's on the back should help...

new tyres always feel mince or a few hundred miles til you wear off the mould release agent but 235x40 on a 7inch width is too much tyre and technically illegal though I doubt anyone would care

ok cool, but 225/45/17 is legal and safe and will handle well? :)

technically a 225x45 should be on a 7.5inch rim but it's better than a 235x40 which is an 8inch rim. You should be fine

I have 8" on the front and 9" rears...the roads in rural Esex are not the smoothest and occasionally you tend to find the odd cave in the road...so I have 245/40/17 on the back and 215/40/17 on the front...the car sits at least an inch higher than it did when I bought it but once all 4 wheels were aligned, camber, toe etc...it handles as sweet as a nut.
Last year I ran Toyo R888's...absolutely awsome tyre, like driving around on toffee apples...but not much change from a big one once fitted and fettled...so this year I have slapped on a set of Falken 452's, half the price...obviously less performance/grip...but still a popular choice within the community so i thought I'd give 'em a go.
