[Mk2] [Turbo] Speedo Sender Unit Questions??

Post by veilside_mr2 »

Are these the same on turbos and N/A`s? My car is a rev 1, but will any unit from any revision fit?

My speedo has stopped working and im thinking its this.

Where could I buy one from also? Anybody know? Mr T only?

Rev 1's are mechanical and are taken from the gearbox, rev 2+ is electrical and taken from elsewere (not sure where sorry). Youll have to check the cable going to the gearbox is all ok?

Ive just been under the car and checked the cable, seems ok. It goes into the speedo drive unit thing. I disconnected it and the "key" bit which goes into the speedo drive seemed ok, not broken or anything.

So im assuming its the actual speedo drive unit that is knackered? Ive had a look on here http://www.tcbparts.co.uk under gearboxes and it has various bits for the speedo drive unit...but im not sure which bit I need? Im assuming either the link cable or the speedo drive?

Is it safe to drive the car without the sender unit in the gearbox? As I can take it out and check to see which bit is broken, but then obviously ill need to order the part and the car will be off the road.

both pickup taken from gearbox

rev1 with have a mechical cable connect to the dash display
rev3 with have a electric cable connected at the dash display and connector at gearbox pick up

PS dirty may fall in so dont drive it with the speedo gear out
NA may also be different since it is different gear box

have you check dash end may be cable come out from the dash

No I havnt checked the dash end yet. I will try and attach a drill to the gearbox end and spin it round to see if the needles moves before I start taking the dash apart.

My Rev 2 Speedo stopped working and it turned out to be the 12 volt to the sensor was broken somewhere, connected a new one up and it worked again (not before buying another sender that didnt fix the problem). Its got 2 wires, ones yellow and black from memory, this is the +12v

It's probably the little plastic gear that sits inside the gearbox on the end of the speedo drive.
