Anyone tried the Gmax suspension kit?...

Post by riot68 »

Gmax Supersport Suspension

Seems very good in terms of what you get for the price but are they worth considering?

I currently have stock rev1 na stuff (rebuildable) but want to at least get it lowered, also might have a leaky shock on the rear too that will need replacing anyway. Only used for street no track.

any help appreciated, thanks...

i'd go with stock toyota shocks (set will cost you around 250 new for all 4 corners) and some aftermarket springs if you want to go lower. Tein are very hard, spax and eibach much more comfortable.

is that stock rev1 shocks from somewhere like TCB? Would the upgrade to black bilsteins not be worth it? Was thinking about the Eibach ones as maybe don't want to go as far as 40mm, cheers...

You can get nice shiny new Turbo non bilstein struts (not inserts) from TCB for around £280 delivered.

Black Bilsteins are approx double that figure

What's the difference between oem na & turbo shocks, and do the turbo ones fit na's?...

Can't tell you what the difference is yet, but yes they fit n/a's as I'm in the process of putting them on my car.

If you have rebuildables and aren't dropping the car too much I'd just get new inserts for the current struts and then your new springs. Bear in mind no struts for the mk2 other than the yellow billies are actually designed for a lowered car but as I said if your not dropping much I wouldn't worry. Eibachs are supposed to be v comfortable, Fensports are hideously harsh, Teins very firm and low (better than the Fensports though but not really suitable to match with standard struts). I've also heard good things about TRD springs but they're like rocking horse poo to find.

So what sort of cost am I looking at for inserts?

Eibach springs / rev1 na shocks from TCB £450
Eibach springs / rev1 turbo shock frm TCB £470 (anyone know the difference?)

If money no objective would yellow bils and Eibachs be the way to go?

thanks again all...

Money no object would be adjustable KONI inserts and Eibachs for me. Generally regarded as one of the most suitable setups for the road.

I was hoping someone would come along and recommend the OP an insert... never run them myself. Uprated damping over stock should work better with the firmer spring rates, better than oem at least.

Koni inserts are £200 EACH on Fensports site... Jeez. Maybe do springs then inserts one axle at a time... or stay with factory inserts... or go for black billies?

Got Koni adjustables on mine (inserts) along with Tein springs. The springs are as many know quite firm indeed but the stance is spot on. The shocks on the other hand are some of the finest around. They know how to make suspension. I would highly recomend them. A little play with the firmness and you can match the springs pretty well.

A friend of mine swore by them years ago and always told me to try them, i was certainly not dissapointed :)

Google Koni SSK for MR2, the complete kit is allot less and also comes with springs :)

I sold the springs supplied and chose Teins, but handy for some to know the kit comes with some.

the kit looks like the best way to go, about £100 more than the other idea but not bad and good to have a set up designed to work together. thanks for that. BTW what's the drop on the Koni springs?

Is it easy to fit the insert? Never done this kind of thing before but want to have a go myself.

cheers...

I didn't fit them, i sold them... on here i think actually. They now supply their own Koni springs which i think are -30mm. The ones sold with the kit previously were another make. They are easily enough changed, but i got friends to help me as i am a crap mechanic :( lol. The Tein springs are -37 & -38 but the fronts drop allot more than they say!

So long as the big nut holding the shock into the strut comes free you should be ok.

I had the Gmax kit on my rev1 and im going to be honest...I was quite impressed for the money!

Ok so if you want a track setup, go with Tein, Koni, Bilstein, D2, BC etc... but if you are modifying on a budget I would recommend the Gmax kit.

It was quite stiff, but not too bad that your spine shatters everytime you hit a bump.

If you arent looking to break any laptimes round the nurburgring I'd get them for £450ish. Otherwise save up a bit and get D2 or BC coilovers for an extra £150odd

ok, so now really confused. Like the kit's as i'd presumably get matched up struts and springs. Gmax £400 but don't know if I fancy 40mm drop, the Koni kit looks good but £150 more. Will have to see how aving the pennies goes, new alarm and stereo install first, dependant on if my rear n/s shock is leaking or not...

Just checked my shock after I cleaned it up the other day and more dark red/black oll type stuff which I guess is the shock leaking?

might have to be 2 rear OEM shocks from TCB for now, then 2 new front ones with Eibach springs later...
