Well my engine and box look to be shagged so i'm looking at all options.
Anyone have any advice?
It's going to be either:
1. Low mileage engine and box transplant.
2. Recon engine and box transplant.
3. Have my engine and box rebuilt.
4. Whack a Camry V6 lump in.

Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
from a turbo to the camry engine? Unless it's the 2GR motor it will be fairly slow so rebuild or source another turbo lump
Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
What's wrong with engine?
Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
Whatever you decide, keep it turbo!
Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
v6 then dont worry about reliability issues (here we go again )

Don't know about reliability issues, owned MR2 turbo's since 2004. (x3) 1 conversion and 2 GTS'. No problem with any of them.
Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
yeah they all break and V6's never go wrong....blah blah blah
Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
IDEAL ENGINES do a recon engine, fitted for £1195 with 6 months warranty and new timing belt, plugs, filter etc.
Sound good? I think it's fair.

Read carefully, particularly where Ideal Engines are mentioned.

Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
Ask them for the engines spec sheet before even considering them.
Theyll go something like "Eh?" back at you down the phone.
Any builder worth his salt will always do a spec sheet so that every measurement is checked and hence is verified so you KNOW that its right and can have confidence in the item youre buying.
Whats that mean, well heres an non exhaustive example of one of mine (non toyota).
Main bearing clearances.
Specified as max- 0.004 (0.10mm)
1) 0.002- 0.0025 (0.06 to 0.07mm)
2) 0.002 (0.06mm)
3) 0.002 (0.06mm)
4) 0.002 (0.06mm)
5) 0.002 (0.06mm)
Big end clearances.
Specified as- 0.0012 to 0.0032 (0.05 to 0.08mm)
1) 0.0015 (0.038mm)
2) 0.0015 (0.038mm)
3) 0.0015- 0.002 (0.038 to 0.06mm)
4) 0.0015 (0.038mm)
Camshaft end thrust:- 0.050mm max
Crankshaft end thrust:- 0.10mm max.
Big end Side clearances.
Specified as: Max 0.23mm
1) 0.17mm
2) 0.15mm
3) 0.17mm
4) 0.15mm
Big ends torqued to 30 foot pounds, book spec- 25 to 31.
Bore diameters (gauged).
1)- 80.50mm
2)- 80.50mm
3)- 80.50mm
4)- 80.50mm
Piston to bore clearance (all) -0.0012 (0.04mm)
Piston ring end gaps at assembly.
1) 0.35mm
2) 0.35mm
3) 0.35mm
4) 0.35mm
5) 0.35mm
Piston ring side clearances as measured at stripdown.
New- 0.02mm -0.08

Top 0.07mm
2nd 0.04mm
3rd 0.04mm
2)

4) 0.01mm
5) 0.01mm
Its the same as "ported heads".
Ask for the flowtest data, its as above, none of its proprietory information so theres no reason to be denied it.
So, before you even get your wallet out, ask them for the engine spec sheet and ill bet they dont supply one, if they did itd not relate to *the* actual engine you were buying.
Go elsewhere until you do get one, stick to reputable companies like Rogue.
Quality costs unfortunately, 1100 quid for a "reconditioned" engine, ask yourself:- The Cost of a set of pistons, gaskets, bearings, machinework and labour?...way more than that there and you generally get what you pay for.
Hope this helps also.

Had this reply from IDEAL ENGINES, SMALL END FAILURE COMMON?
\/ \/ \/
Dear n9thx,
morning, small ends are kind of common on those
lumps. if you can bring the vehicle down to us i
can do a recon engine supplied and fitted for
1295.00. if you want the gearbox as well i only
have tested second hand units in stock at the
minute but could do it as engine and box fitted
for 1700.00 all in. i have 2 spots available early
next week if you would like to have it done but
then it looks like the schedule jams up a bit near
the end of the week so let me know if you are
interested and i can pencil you in.
thanks
tony

They do have good feedback on ebay though.........

Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
After further research.....
22 Feedback from sales (mostly small stuff)
166 feedback from buying in tools! and a body fat monitor
Only 1 engine sold on the feedback.
Plus a company that's sourced all their equipment from ebay? Hmmm.....

Jeez...ask him to see the calibration certificate on his optical profilometer...
Run...run away!

Re: Recon engine or V6 conversion?
I'm gonna book it in with him for next week, don't know if i'll make it though
