Going to try and restore my drivers leather seat ...

Post by greekmr2 »

Hi guys,

I am going to try to restore my driver's seat ... it has a hole on the bolster equal to two 2 pounds coins ...
I ordered a repair kit from furniture clinic ... will let you know for the results

One thing I need to ask ... is the leather trim removable from the seat?? the stitching has gonne in some places so I would like to stich it up.
Any ideas has anyone attempted it before?

Yeas you can remove it, id unbolt the seat for better access (4 bolts plus seatbelt nut)

I will remove the seats to make the repair easier and bring them in the house :)

So if the leather slides off the seats it will make the restitching quite easy job then. :)

To be honest, from what I know now I would not bother with a Repair...

Speak to one of our German friends on the Events Duderstadt thread.
They have a company over there selling complete new covers that are good enough to be OEM (Saw some last year) - cost was around the £100 mark if I recall.... Much cheaper than the ~£500 odd DIY solutions found in the UK.

The Kit arrived today
I will take before and after pics and see the outcome

Now the question is ... how do I remove the seats out of the car lol

Apparently it does not need to take the cover off for the repair of the hole ...
the cover I will need to take it off to repair the stitching I think

Slide the seat fully back and you will access 2x 14mm (from memory) bolts. undo these and slide the seat fully forward, 2 more bolts at the back. and that it :thumleft:

It's a bit to late to tell you a lot of people buy a good passenger side cover and fit it to the drivers seat :(

I know .. but to be honest if the repair kit does not work I will do that ;)
the passenger back cover is out and given to my neighbour to stitch it back he has all the leather needles etc needed.

I am going to start applying the leather kit to cover the hole now

Question ... there are some coper rings that hold the back cover in place... I had to twist them open as they were a pain to remove ...
if I use tie rods afterwards would it work well?? or anyone has any better suggestion?

Some pictures of how it looks before I start anything :

A hole on the bolster and a rip exactly on the middle of the bottom

A big hole on the side bolster.

As you see the stitching has gonne on the top left of the back

They both look pretty beaten up, just buy a new pair. Should only be £100 or so for some decent ones.

Almost completed ... have taken several pics of the progress .... just a couple of more coats and then it will be done I am amazed!! it looks really good.
If I was more patient with sanding I would have had a finish you could not tell the difference from new :)
