[Mk2] [NA] 4 Warning Lights

Post by psummers »

I went out for a spin after washing my car and after about 1/2 a mile 4 waning lights came up. The battery light came up first shortly followed by the malfunction light, low oil light and engine fan light. I pulled over straight away to visually check nothing was wrong in the engine bay, all fine, so I turned around and went home.

The engine does seem to be making a whining noise that you can hear in this video.

I did diagnostics check and no error codes came up. I did a quick search on here and it seems to point to an alternator fault but a new anternator was put in earlier this year.

This is my dash with the lights (note the handbrake light is on too!):

Any ideas on what it could be?

could be your alternator got a soaking,
during the washing of your car.
give it a chance dry out.
and try it again.

Tried it again this morning and the waning lights came on once I revved pased about 4000 rpm. I checked the alternator belt and it seemed tight enough. Could it be some sort of sensor issue?

yeah, thats typical alternator failure.
You can test your voltage on the battery with the engine running, should be about 14v.

Battery indicator wasn't sitting at the top & the noise it was making sounded like the belt was just slipping on the pulley to me.
