[Mk2] [Turbo] DIY Intake

Post by ej2_sir »

Was looking at some of the intakes available for the MR2 (mainly in the states) and found them to be quite expensive for what they were, so I thought Id have a go myself and do a bit of a walkthrough for anyone who wanted to do the same. I have completed this using no specialist techniques like welding etc. This has cost approx £60 which I think is quite reasonable and I am very happy with the sound and throttle response. All comments/questions welcome.

So to start with I purchased a 3" 45 degree bend off ebay for around £12

Next was to get a 3" to 2.75" reducing silicone elbow to suit ct26/c20b turbos. Bout £15 quid from ebay again.

Now its time to pick your filter. I went K&N as I feel they offer best filtration. The model I chose was RU 5111 which was about £29 from Opie Oils.

Right heres where the fun begins. Whip your air box off and piping to the turbo and cut your 3" pipe down accordingly

So now your going to have to make some takeoffs for whatever you want to put back in to the intake. I have a rev 3 so I have a filter on my breather and vent my bov to atmosphere. This means I only need 1 takeoff for Idle up. I really took some time to think about the easiest way of doing this as it was causing me headaches. In the end I got a rubber grommit used in standard electrical boxes. I then used a step cutter to cut a 20mm hole in the pipe. Now fiddle the grommit in and insert the coupler from your stock airbox for a tight and internally flush takeoff

Fitted filter and heat shield/rain shield bought off.....you guessed ebay! bout £8.

All plumbed in and looking shiny!

funnily enough Im still deciding on this. At the moment I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the heat shield and attached it in a highly technical way(tie wrap 8-[ ). I did a bit more work that I havent listed as it was difficult to picture. I basically took the air feed off the resonator box, cut it down and bolted it back in upside down giving a nice feed coming from the vent. You can just make out in the picture
