[Mk2] [Turbo] Just changed the turbo on my rev3 what a nightmare

Post by gaztubby »

Everything was going fine until we snapped 5 out of the 8 manifold studs ](*,) and could not find anyone who could supply new ones ( toyota could get them for next tuesday #-o ). So decided to try and get the snapped ones out, there was about 15mm sticking out of the head so tried the nut type stud extractors failed ](*,) then borrowed a socket type with rollers which got 3 out then broke  .

We then decided to weld a nut to the stud and use this to try and get them out on the third go one came out and the last one took 5 goes and was getting very short but out it came with the aid of a 1m long breaker bar \:D/

Then discovered that the turbo to downpipe studs are the same except for the little drive bit on the end. So we stripped these out of the old turbo and we fitted them into the head.

We thought our troubles were over but we had bent the oil return line when we took the manifold and old turbo off so we had one and a half hours of fun straightening it.

But as soon as I got behind the wheel and drove it with boost again it was all worth it :thumleft:

Soaked them overnight made no diferance but I think the heat of welding the nuts on broke them free in the end, they were glowing red hot
