Hi Rob,
I was told that these are a waste of time and effort.
So, get one of these. I did and it is a great bit of kit.

Hello Bod,

I believe that this set up sounds better.
But, I would like to be as original as possible.
Everything possible is installed on that car, (For Dutch standards)
Only the airco is not installed, and the subwoofer.
And just the subwoofer seems to me a nice upgrade, although it should be linked to a newer radio :wink:

Just dug one of my subs out of the garage and had a look and it's quite different. Mine only has 5 wires going into the plug whereas yours has seven.

Does your car have the connector under the seat for the sub? If so what does it look like? The connector on my sub is only a 6 pin connector (With one pin not used) so it appears that Toyota may have used more than one connector type for these.

/EDIT Just had a poke around in the EPC and it seems that there are different part numbers for US subs compared to european LHD cars. No idea why they would be different, seems you have the US one based on the part number so you might have more luck looking at wiring diagrams on US sites.

Around £125 I think. Nice bits of kit, I have one, although it has never been fitted.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Yes, they are.

What are you hoping to achieve by fitting this apart from a distorted farting noise ? Remember this is early 80's technology...

@Kaiowas:

Thanks.
I already have taking a look @ one american site.
And found something. (not complete) just keep searching :wink:

@Ollie@SkyInsurance:
One MK1 stays original as possible.
There are no extra speakers mounted, only replaced speakers.
In the dashboard (4 inch) and behind the T-tops (3,4 inch)
And the sound is still crappy :oldtongue:
Ohw and the radio is replaced.

So i like to add an original (extra) option to the car. :D

I will make a picture what i did with the other MK1 on the sterio eqiupment. :wink:

Rob,
I have a Kenwood Head Unit in mine linked to 100watt rear speakers and 150watt front speakers all of which are in the origional holes and origional size and an active sub which is under the seat and all are Alpine and basically invisible.
This will be the look you also have but you won't have the sound quality with the Mk1 sub.
I got mine for £53 + p&p on ebay.
Food for thought.

True!

But i already did this to 1 MK1

Replaced the speakers behind the t-tops,
put some extra speakers in the doors
Image
A wooferbox in the middle with 2 (5'') 13cm speakers, and the filters are also in the wooferbox.
Image
Image
And the tweeters (of that compo set) on the dash
Image

and put a tiny pioneer amp under the drivers seat.
sounds good!
But dont forget to put some cushioning material in the wooferbox.
Otherwise it sounds hollow :wink:

Its alive! :D

Here is the sub on the workbench:
Image

And the sound of the old woofer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY1mcyAqurw

Afer that i put an old woofer that fits, i found one in the attic :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6Fjt8a-zR0
I didnt expect a super sound.
(I expected nothing much)
But I found it a bit hollow sounding, so take one speaker input apart from the sub, and it was a lot better.
I.e. the pluses and minuses of the speakers were not properly connected.
So just try it, to put wire to wire if the sound becomes a bit better. and finally its better en certainly not hollow :D
Result:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opciS1sL4Zg
Its not perfect, now am i searching for a 4'' woofer.

This is how the subwoofer is gonna be conected:
Bleu = 12 supply
Green = swiched 12V supply
Black = ground
Red = speaker left +
Gray = speaker left -
Yellow = speaker right +
Brown = speaker right -

Thanks for thinking along :thumleft:

Boom

Post by ulysess1966 »

Got these yesterday in 'B&M Bargains' for £20. Sound isn't bad hooked up to an old Kenwood multichanger I use for testing. Not really sure they'll fit anywhere though, but they light up blue if you feed them a 12 volt supply... :)

Image

The 5-pin version of the sub-woofer wiring has the BLUE wire connected to a switched 12-volt supply and the other 2 pairs are fed directly from the front speaker connections. You can take an earth from the mounting bolt for the Toyota sub-woofer on the floor.

Every diagram I could find showed the 7-pin version, very strange.

Bass box

Post by ulysess1966 »

I really liked the box between the seats so I spent a couple of weekends working on this conversion of the £20 boom box I got. The MDF came out of a skip and I also got a cross-over (filter) circuit and 2 good tweeters from an old pair of Awia stereo speakers as well as some acoustic wadding. All I needed was speaker carpet and spray glue which cost about £15 all told and a bit of trial and error and effort. The speakers light up when you put the headlights on!!

They replace the pathetic rear speakers in the MR2 and have a good rich sound from a Kenwood head unit driving 4 x 50 watts output. I might put an amp in later.
