Gearbox oil

Post by easty-5 »

Rev 3 tubby, apparently has an TRD
diff. I'm going to change the oil. I have 5 litres, is this enough?

The gearbox and limited slip diff on the mr2 are 2 separate boxes matey,so will both have to be filled individually :thumleft:

Im sure if memory serves me well???? the turbo gearbox holds 3.8litres so yes mate,as to get the gearbox full, you just pore oil into the gearbox once it starts coming out its full :thumleft: but first thing is make sure the fill plug comes out as you dont want to drain the box to find out you cant replace the oil  and for the fill and drain plugs you will need a 24mm six-point socket :thumleft:

No, my apologies, from a quick search it seems they are. I could swear I've seen someone (an affiliate if I remember correctly) stating that they're not. I shall carry on searching!

Edit: searches all seem to confirm that the LSD is indeed seperate to the gearbox oil. I'll shut up now

So if you fill the gearbox up you fill the limited slip diff up as well   there separate items,to be filled separately.

If it's an original viscous LSD then it's sealed.

The TRD is likely to be a plate type so will rely on the gearbox oil to work. They must share the same oil or friction modifier additives wouldn't work.

The lsd and gearbox internals definately share the same oil, at least they did when I rebuilt the box on my car.

Can't remember the capacity of the box, but 5 litres is definately enough. Just make sure its suitable for lsd's.

It's Fuch's fully synthetic 75-90 gearbox oil. I'm sure it will be fine.

I have TRD Diff in mine and had loads of problems with gearbox oil. You need 3.8l and mine did not like 75-90 at all. Wheels started hopping and grabbing constantly at slow speed turns. Swapped it out for comma 80 -90 lsd oil (red bottle bout fiver a litre from most motor factors) and this cured it straight away
