hi

done a spot of paint finishing on the MR2...the paintwork is in pretty poor condition, its an old car i guess...

so this is what we have to start with, car cleaned





apart from the scratches and swirl marks theres some really odd marks in the paint...bit like craters, i dont know if they are visable on the pics, the whole car is also splattered with white gloss paint from the garage:shake:

first thing was a claybar, nice and quick, gives good results and drags a bit more dirt from the surface

the 1500 grit sandpaper, dulls the paintwork and leaves you wondering if you done the right thing lol...from this point things could only get better...:whatever:










adding compound brought the shine back

i used the wool pad on a machine buffer to give a deep cut with the rubbing compound, followed by foam pads on the 3M machine polish and glaze, finished off with the rosa wax:smokin:










the craters just wouldnt come out of the paint...something more aggressive than 1500 is needed maybe?...im not that brave TBH:wow:


still fairly happy with the result, all but the really deep scrathes have gone as has the gloss and the swirl marks

Can i ask in detail how ya done it? Did you just wet and dry your paint with 1500grit? I'm gonna try it but on a spare door i have lol...

yep thats exactly it, i couldnt get hold of 2000 grit so used 1500 but it was fine...if anything not agressive enough!

so procedure was

clean car, leather off, clean car again...leather off again

claybar

wash car with water and leather to remove sand (just a bucket of water and keep dipping leather in and out as you wipe panels down)

sand

wash car (bucket, leather)

rubbing compound (machine)

wash car (bucket, leather)

polish (machine)

wash car (bucket leather)

glaze (machine)

wash car (bucket, leather)

Wax

remove wax with autoglym detailing cloth




took me about 5 hours, no breaks other than my back, two people on the car all the time

oops, the final "polish" should have said wax...(even though the wax i used is actually called polish)

Jem i assume wax there all basically the same I use carnuba my self

Dude a quick one for ya when ya was sanding the paint down with 1500 grit did you go in straight lines or circluar motions? cheers

looks really good, when I got my last mr2 the black had faded to grey almost inplaces but with a bit of time and the right stuff you can do wonders with.

Really want to paint my new one white but im worried that i'll get sick of not getting a really good shine like darker colours do, Ive felt that way in the past with silver cars of mine. dont want another blue car though awsome for shiny etc but had to many blue i need change, still fancy red too as best of both worlds

the wax i used is the 803 polish rosa (wax) as pictured above

Omg... you really used sandpaper on the car without re-paint afterwards?

That's sick ! I think... I mean, I don't really am specialised to know what it really will do..

but I'm scared to death to use it on my car, lol.

It's very like grit as said 2K grit would be better for a car with hardly any marks

you might be better just sticking to the wax mate, or do some reading about how to renovate paintwork lol

Ren0w i recently used megs cutting compound stuff and it's agressive at all You could be better with that +removes all crap from ya paint etc
