Radio controlled AW11

Hi guys & gals,

I have left this message on other forums but this is the best place to ask.
Where can I get an AW11 body shell for a radio controlled car?
I have left a post on the MR2 only facebook wall for Anthony Pedwell as it was his article that I saw them on, but as yet there is no reply.
Any ideas???

I've done a few searches on yahoo auction and the web in general after seeing the same article to no avail.

There is an SW20 body available (http://www.abchobby.com/productpage/mr2.html) and the car that Anthony is pretending to sit on definitely looks like a Mk2 but can't tell for sure about the other ones pictured. Maybe he got his marks mixed up??!

Be interested if you get a response from him, if there is such a thing as an AW11 body I'd love to get my paws on one.

Can you not just make your own?

My neighbour is into radio control boats and he makes everything from scratch apart from the RC handset and the electric motors.

I've helped him in that I've knocked him up bespoke motor/servo controllers and these are mappable to make the motor behave more realistically compared to the basic proportional control. eg they have a MCU based controller (about 10 times more powerful than the MCU chip in a real mk1 MR2 ECU. How times have changed )

He's in his 70s and the boat shells look really good. Just like scaled down boats. Mind you it takes him months to make a boat but the results are really good

Not without some very expensive equipment, given that R/C car shells are typically made from vacformed plastic

I've seen that and it looks good but I'm after a clear vacform shell such as you can buy from a model shop in the shape of a scoobie for example.
I think I may be out of luck though unless Anthony from MR2 Only gets back to me as all my other avenues seem to be dead ends.

Boddney, do you know anywhere that has a vacuform press?

My school used to have one and I seem to remember people there making them. I think they did it with toy cars or other bodyshells. Or if your handy with a chisel, make a wooden model of the Mk1 to form around.

If Oukie would let you take a mould of his, no doubt someone with the equipment could bash out a batch.
With CAD you could even scale them, and make bodies for 1/8, 1/12, 1/24 scale cars....

All that is really cool but I have no talent when it comes to making moulds and have no access to a vacform machine so I will let you guys do what you can and if you want to and maybe post up when some are made.
They will need to be about 1/12th to be right on my chassis.

I would be interested in one of these if it was the right size (I have HPI rush evo, and with a MR2 body it would look ) , we do have a vac former but no 3d scanner so could not make wooden model to make different sizes etc. The only help I could probably give is dimensions as well from my ones shown below:

To the best of my knowledge there are no models currently out there in a suitable size and with good enough accuracy. To do this properly you'd need to extract the 3D model from something like Gran Turismo. Then have a CNC machine make up a mould, then vac form some bodies from it.

If anyone has the time, skills and facilities to produce something to fit a standard 1/10th scale touring car chassis then I think they'd definitely sell, I've been keeping an eye out for years but never seen anything.

If money was no object then a 3D prototype could be done with Stereolithography.

You could either make the moulds or the body.

Where I work we have used this process (i.e. we use a specialist company)to make rapid prototypes of our comms radios at work although 3D CAD has become so powerful these days we rely on Stereolithography les and less.

It's amazing to see how it all works. You can have solid white or clear plastic.

The advantage is that you can draw it with tremendous accuracy on a PC and then this process can effectively print it out in 3D. You can create shapes that impossible with normal machining etc.

However, the cheapskate way to do it would be to make a dummy using a robust form of papier mache and then use that as a reference to make moulds. Very time consuming though...

Why not start an open project that draws a 3D model of an AW11?

If enough people contributed then it could result in a really accurate model. This could have loads of uses and the project would probably never end as people could add stuff in the interior etc etc

I'm already getting an AW11 built for rFactor. I'm sure somehow I could get the blueprints from the 3D model and somehow export it to CAD or related software for manufacture. I'll let you guys know when it's finished
