How much boost are you running on your Rev3 engine?

Post by Revo »

Just out of interest, mine is running 1.4 bar on a hybrid turbo.

Previous owner ran it on this and its been fine for me. But what's the max people are running and how long will it likely last before it goes bang if I leave it on 1.4bar? :)

I also have intercooler, dumpvalve and full exhaust

Hi mate i've got a rev3 running at around a bar at the moment, was running 1.2+ but I turned the mbc down a tad.

Just waiting to get another profec b and i'll run it at about 1.1 bar.

This is on a pretty standard rev 3, on mods are exhaust, decat, cold air feed but I do have a fat ARC side mount intercooler which should help keep the temps down :thumleft:

Yeah I forgot to add I have intercooler etc etc as well. Just wondering how much boost the internals of the engine can take before things start to get a bit dangerous. !

My honest opinion and recommended advice...... doesn't sound much... peak it at 1.3 on cooler days, otherwise, run 1.2 bar... heat of the summer... 1 bar...

The piston integrity is one of the issues... I tested a stock engine with a chargecooler, so not the heat killing it off... it gradually got worse in performance, didn't feel fast... when I pulled it apart, all 4 pistons had stress cracks or cracks around the ringland.. between the 1st and 2nd ring. This was running a continuous 1.4 to 1.5 bar !

Engine had only done 45K miles.. and unopened... I did this to test the integrity and swapped it out for my built engine.... and changed out the pistons on the one damaged... going back to 2004 now !

I know you'll miss that hit, but believe me.. for the cost and efforts involved, simply not worth it.. unless you've got a spare £2k+ kicking about !!

Your just talking about the standard pistons though right, not the block? :) Forgies are fine for up to 1.6bar most seem to say, but I agree, 1.5bar is a good safe limit

I'm talking about max boost a stock block can take before things go wrong :)

Well I solved the mystery of the high boost!

Took the car out to have a fiddle with the boost settings and give the new brake pads a few more heat cycles before the track day and...

you guys are never going to let me live this down.. but I made a discovery, its not 1.4bar, but 14psi!! yes thats right I read the flippin gauge wrong and assumed it was in bar, but its in PSI!

14 PSI is actually about 1 bar!!

But this shameful storey has a happy ending.. according to you guys 1.2bar seems happily 17.5psi.. which I promptly turned the boost controller up to!

Peaks at 17psi now and goes to about 10-12psi after 5k

So now its even quicker! hahaha!! Weeeeeeee!

Good news as it means my car was never boosting more than it should of been :) happy face.

In reality, if your setup is bone stock ( ecu / engine ), you wouldn't see those level of boost without hitting fuel cut... sort of a misfire on boost ! Well done for owning up !! ](*,)

Remember though, setting the boost to 1.2 bar on cooler days, it may spike to 1.3X which inadvertingly will hit fuel cut... again though... as a precaution, during the "hotter" days, try not to kick it too much as heat is then the killer of pistons... or turn the boost down... this is the luxury of electronic boost controllers ! :thumleft:

10-12psi at redline, you sure???

Sounds like the boost controller needs setting up.
Should still be pulling 17psi at 7k rpm

Silly question I know, but this is 1.4bar and not 14psi right?

Cool I found a manual :)

Looks like I need to turn the gain up a bit to get a bit more consistency :)
