[Mk2] [NA] (probably silly) question about brake pads/calipers

Post by dave5526 »

I have a sticky caliper on my '2 and have bought 2 new (what I believe are) front calipers to replace them. I also have new discs and pads all round to go on and am just in the process of cleaning up the new calipers to paint before putting them on.

However I notice having opened the box of new discs and pads that one set of pads is much smaller than the others, but the bigger ones I have match the front calipers I am cleaning up. Is this correct, are the front pads bigger than the rears? I dont know why but I'd assumed if any the rear pads would be bigger. The smaller set are approx 95mm long on the pad surface compared to about 120mm on the longer ones (which are the same size as the pads I have removed from the new calipers).

Bit worried I have either a) the wrong calipers or b) rev1 brake pads.

front pads are always bigger, the rear calipers are smaller and only had 1 piston where as the fronts are bigger and have 2 pistons :thumleft:

infact the rear brake pads will last for ages compaired to the fronts as the rears dont get used anywhere near as much

You will need a brake caliper rewind tool for the rears and the fronts just squash in

OR you can use a 15mm open ended spanner to wind the rear calipers in...
