[All] [Generic] J, JJ, ", mm's, offsets, widebodys and confusion

Post by Jimbob »

Right, I'm a bit confused. As I understand it.............

- J and JJ are rim profiles made to a specific standard
- A rim width is measured in " to the extreme outside faces
- An offset is the difference between the wheel centre line and hub face

So my wheels are 254mm wide measuring from the inside edge of the rim to the outside edge of the rim. So I guess 10" wide The centre of the rim has JJ stamped on it. So 10JJ.

The distance from the rear face of the wheel to the hub face is about 135mm. So I worked out the offset as..........

254 / 2 = 127mm, and 135mm-127mm = +8.0

I have also measured the rim depth from the edge of the outer rim face to the surface which the spoke faces bolt onto. Thats 88mm.

Now I went onto a website to find some info out about the Volk GT-U and found the following link....................

http://www.upgrademotoring.com/wheels/gt-u.htm

So my 17x10JJ +8.0 are on there where?

The reason I want to know is I am looking at new wheel options. Also interested in what people have if they have widebody's.

Cheers

Bit of useful reading:

Wheel/tyre calculator specificly for MR2

http://mr2.gordaen.com/wt_calc.php

General wheel/tyre calculator
http://www.rims-n-tires.com/info_specs.jsp

http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html

The "perfect" wheel/tyre combination for a widebody as per the brochure is:

17x7JJ +13 215/40 R17

17x8.5JJ +7 245/40 R17

That car is off the "hella flush" thread on www.MR2OC.COM and those wheels protude beyond the tires and the bodywork if you look at the other pics - not a good look IMO

gives him an idea what is possible with offsets though. personally if i had a trd i would want to fit the widest wheel i could  at least a 10". 8.5" is a bit weak.

its all a matter of opinion and taste, granted im not one for the stretched look myself raise the car a bit and fit some propper sized rubber :thumleft:

Meister S1 3 pieces is what I am going to get, didn't really want to let on :-$

Seen that one it runs daft offsets thats why they stick out, he's on

Front : 18x8.5 -12 215/35/18.
Rear : 19x10.5 -23 235/35/19

I'm running 10's now and you could easily get 11's on without hassle on my car, but I am trying to work out my exact wheel spec as a baseline to calculate which way to go.

I want my wheels to sit about 10mm more into the arch, I have a good 30+mm clearance inside the wheel arch to the strut (coilovers). That will allow slightly wider tyres, i'm only on 235's now. They grip well but break every now and again, and in 3rd thats nervy :pale:

Going crazy big just sacrifices handling for looks. 10J is fine. 8.5J is pretty small as I run 9J on the front now. However there are clearance issues on 17's with 215's. The tyres catch on full lock when parking and sit well out in the arch, but my car is low. I will probably lift the front a tad and get 225's up front and 275 on the back.

I'll take a look at PM's, cheers Jeff.

Its quite interesting the TRD site recommends 8.5 +7 :-k

If i'm running 10 + 9 that makes my rear aches approx 21mm wider? Theres no way I could run any more offset as it would be inline with the arch and clash on bumps. Maybe I should measure the outside width of the car?

Arches should be 30mm wider each side than stock so car is 60mmm wider overall:

Hmmm, makes for interesting reading.

I am now lost in thw world of offsets, seem slike I can't get what I want to fit.
