[Mk2] [Generic] New bonnet mod

Post by gazrev1tubby »

Hi all, I apologise if this goes against the grain but i've just completed a mod to my bonnet and wanted peoples thoughts/opinions

The link is to the mr2 oc where i've posted a project thread and thought it would be easier to put a link in as opposed to writing it all again  :thumleft:

Can I ask - when you bend down the two pieces, are they fibreglass or metal sides that you made up ?

Would you reckon this is doable for someone who has never done any fibreglass work before ?

I love a bit of a challenge and am good with following instrunctions/guides etc

TIA

Hi rob, i'm certainly no bodywork specialist - I just enjoy playing in my garage ! I would think you'd be fine if you attempted something like this or similar, it just takes time and planning

As for the sides, originally I was going to do them in metal and hire a welder but I figured i'd try with fibreglass first to see if it was strong enough. It is in fact solid, and there is probably about half a dozen layers to build up a decent thickness.

I have used fibreglass and bodyfiller before - a few times actually, but nothing quite like the bonnet. I had a spare so I thought what the hell - if I bu88er it up it's only cost me time and a few quid :D

See how you get on bud - if you decide to try it, and of course post up your progress :thumleft:
I have in fact got 3 other people over on mr2oc that want me to make one for them now - didn't realise it'd be so popular lol :thumleft:

Cool, ta for the info :thumleft:

I've never done any fibreglass work before but I've used a filler typre product for repairing plastic bumpers etc

I think I'll try do something in fibreglass first to get used to the process.

Is there any brand name/fibreglss product you'd recommend ? I've seen Fibreglass kits in Halfords before.

Also, any particular brand of filler ?

P.S. I am over in Dublin - if I was in the UK, my first thought would definitely be to ask if you'd make one for some $$$ :)

Cheers
Rob

No worries bud, I used the same fibreglass resin and hardener that halfords sell - in a yellow tin but the name escapes me ? Just be careful with the amount of hardener you mix in as if you get it wrong it'll set before you manage to get it out of the pot !
For filler - my favourite is p38 by davids as it's super easy to sand and shape but it's pretty expensive. I actually bought some cheaper stuff to try on the bonnet and although the working properties are just as good, it was more difficult to sand

Also make sure you wear latex gloves as fibreglass is awful stuff to get off skin lol !!!!!

If you need any measurements or tips or even advice, feel free to ask dude :thumleft:

Thanks mate - yes I did, although I may try single pack cellulose next time I do some spraying as it's supposed to dry quicker ? I thought the idea of two pack was that it dries faster due to the hardener ? :D

I thought 2 pack was quicker?.

Will be spraying mine in summer hopefully, although 2 pack may not be an option for me due to small garage, hence question as I will probably use cellulose.
Just wanted to see what the finish would be like.

Thanks bud - funnily enough it was your thread I read and decided I would also got the same route. It was only after thinking about strength and the filler possibly cracking around the fg that I decided to just modify the metal :thumleft:
If yours has lasted then I take my hat off to you sir

Thanks everone else for the good comments - makes little jobs like this all the more worthwhile :thumleft:

Next custom mods on my list - flush headlights, possibly vented wings and a BIG brake upgrade :D

no worrys glad i inspired you matey, sadly my bonnet did still crack over time hairline crack but i might use a better quality filler as mine was quite cheap, and hopefully give it a better paint job this time aswell as its a bit orange peeley still first time ive sprayed 2 pack, nice work i admire people who have a go must admit i like the vented wings they do look nice put some pics up when your done. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
