[Mk2 NA] sorry guys, need a peace of mind bump

Today my mr2 (to which i will upload in the garage for all to see soon i promise) would not start after driving it to work, doing 7 hours, then came out of work.. only to find it would not start.. as if it was firing on 1 spark plug.

I called the rac out, who examined it.. and asked me to turn it over... I showed him how it was.

He asked me to put my foot on the gas.. it was spluttering.. but started to get higher, and higher in revs. but did not sound healthy.. (obviously)

he then (whilst increasing the revs) started to unplug the HT leads from the dizzy one by one.. to see where the problem was.. each one he took off made no impact (cos it was only firing on one)....

But as he was doing this the smell of petrol was over powering.. and white, then black smoke was banging out the back.. enough to make me nearly die with fear. (this is a 99 53k tbar)....

I thought the worst having no mechanical knowledge at all...

After 5 mins of this life imploding moment.. he checked the dizzy.

To find the rotor arm had fallen off. The two screws had some lose , and it was hanging on by a thread.

The contact point on the rotor arm was bent, he straightend it, and screwed it back on (but the plastic guide had snapped off) and I fired it up, and all was well. bit more smoke then all was gone.

I asked him if the smoke was normal, and tried not to imply that he has contributed to fu*king my car up.. (but what do i know)

And he said that it's normal, as it was burning fuel as only firing on one plug.

My question is.... could that 5 mins of black and white smoke caused or could it contribute to a problem later, or is it perfectly normal and nothing to worry about?

If it is and its had 2 supposed services with toyota (one MASSIVE service 1 week ago!!!!), and they obviously do not check things that would take them 5 mins in a service.. that DO need checking every now and again, have I got a argument when I ring them tomorrow.

Sorry to be a newb again.. but it annoys me when u pay the extra for Supposed Toyota TLC.. and you get ZIP. I'm learning!

Only thing i'd be worried about is all that unburnt petrol in the catalytic convertor... Im sure I read something somewhere that said it wasn't good....

Get onto Mr.T and ask them if the dissy cap/rotor arm would of been checked, replaced or touched during that last major service... if so, I think you and Mr.T need to have words.... thats just slack, especially the price you pay for a Toyota service.

Main dealer servicing will always be poor. If you look at the Toyota service schedule 90% of the work is 'visual inspection' e.g. distributor. This means an external check for cracks, same with plugs, hoses, brakes etc. Nothing is removed or unbolted. The hundreds of pound you pay are labour charges for a roving eye over your car. Find a friendly local garage.

i second that comment, mr.t is a raging rip-off when it comes to servicing... i would rather buy a 2 with fsh as opposed to a ftsh, they are lazy xxxx who do nowt and like to put an extra few 000s at the end of a normal invoice..to which we have the privelage of paying..cheers toyota :evil:

Dealer fault 100%

"A", "B" and "C" service schedules all say "inspect rotor, replace if necessary", which they obviously did not.

And so they should be! So often the public perception is that dealers are God's gift to all things with a spanner and at the same time all small specialists are nothing better than back street bodgers.

I for one, and i am sure there are several others here, always take the time to do a thorough job on customers' cars, and it really pigs me off when people pay over the odds for what is nothing better than some attention from a kindergarten class.

Go get 'em and make them feel the pain!

OK rang them.. told them what happened and pointed them to their checklist.

Its in for a warranty job next week, so advised wanted new dizzy and rotor.. and also to re check everything they said they've checked.

Hi All,
A little tip from me about taking your car in for service, especially if you have doubts about the quality of service. Add a little splodge of paint to the sides of any screws or bolts that should be undone to check items on the service schedule, that way you can easily check to see if it has been done. Bit devious I know but if you are paying for a check you should get what you pay for.
