Jim, i had to replace a strut recently and found the same

- no allen key hole, just the stud and nut

(the rears however, do have them).

On mine, at the base of the stud, there is an oblong piece of metal, the flats of which you can grip with an open ended spanner

- in my case i think it was 13mm with the nut being 14 mm.

Im assuming that the droplinks i have on the front are aftermarket ones, or from the days were droplinks seemed to be only avaliable from Mr T and there from another car.
