Clutch knackered at less than 18K?

Post by Grendel »

Just got my car back from MOT which it passed thankfully with no faults except it was confirmed that i have a fair bit of slipping clutch and it may be on it's way out. And the hand brake cable needs changing soon.

Thing is i had the clutch replaced in April 06 with a Blueprint one from Mr Clutch at £430 and have only coverd 17543 miles since it was changed. Unfortunitly Mr Clutch warranty is only 2 years so it's now out of date. But surely it cant be warn out already?
I don't drive aggressively or do lots of hill starts so what else could be wrong with it and is it reparable or is it a case of they would have to take it off to look at the internals so may as well put a new one back on?

Was it def a Blueprint one Ian? I've heard that MrClutch have been known to use recon units which can be somewhat eeerrrrr crap. 8-[

Is it possible to repair the clutch if it's only a oil seal or spring failure?
Or is it just as cheap to put a new clutch in?

If your taking the box off, you may as well put a new one in.

That’s what I was thinking. Odd thing is it works out cheap to buy my own clutch and get the local garage to fit it than using the Mr Clutch cowboys. Wish i had read the reviews and saved my money before i let them touch my car ](*,)

So clutches vary from £50 - £300 depending what make I get then around £200 labour.

Well have bought a EXEDY clutch kit on E-bay.
Just got to decide where to get it fitted.

How long a job is it to fit a clutch?

Its a pain to do it by yourself, but half a day with 2 people, probably even less if you're Paul Woods!

I did mine recently, its really easy to get all the bits off, but I needed help getting the gearbox back on again as its just heavy and awkward without an overhead crane.

Just as awkward with one! lol

The only hard bit is getting the box back on, everything else is relatively straight forward.

The box will either go back on first time or be a pain. Using ramps makes it alot easier, did mine easily in half a day.

Really wish i put a light weight flywheel on at the same time ](*,)

My last clutch was a Blueprint (I believe) and lasted me over 5 yrs and 60k. Check to see what comes off when you're changing it out.

It took Tom & I less than 30 minits to remove gearbox, fit new clutch and re-fit gearbox :thumleft:

However, the engine was out the car :eye:

Previous attempts with engines in cars have varied from just under 1/2 day to a full day - it depends how successfull you are at lining the box up with the crank spline and how many hands/lifts/jacks you have to help lift said box...
