Unplug the engine bay temp sensor and turn the ignition on - the engine bay fan should start spinning. If not, then it's probably goosed and part of the problem.
thanks paul - must admit feel a bit wrong cutting the wire!
Now then when you say unplug the engine bay temp sensor is that the one that is at the back left corner of the engine (gearbox end) or the temp sender that is near the coolant filler neck??!!!
sorry to be thicko!
I don't get any warning lights when the engine bay temp sensor is disconnected. When on track I run the engine bay fan all the time.
Just a thought - Have you tried pulling any diagnostic codes at all?
Any help with using the Diag??
I can confirm that the engine bay fan works (when I unplug the oil temp sensor) but the oil temp tensor looks damaged... I need to replace this £63 from Toyota
assuming I still have the dash lights on when this gets replaced it sounds like the alternator(s) have issues....
Any advances??
To test for diagnostic codes Bridge E1 & T ports in the diagnostics connector with a paper-clip or similar.
Have a read here: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jimilawson/V ... Codes.html
I've never had to disconnect the oil temp sensor to get the engine bay fan running. I never knew that would work.
It's normally the engine bay temp sensor that needs disconnecting - it's located on the engine hook closest to the cabin.
LOL
whoever told you that is 150% wrong. There is no oil anywhere near it - well near enough for it to measure oil temp. If there is, then you have a whole other (much) bigger problem
It measure the ambient temperature in the engine bay is all
They very rarely go wrong, even if the tip is smashed they often still work as designed.
Sorry to dig this thread up again but I am still no further on and could do with your help!!
I am still suffering from two red lights on the Dash - 1 battery light, and 1 with a picture of the engine and a fan.
I have now tried 3 different alternators of which a know 2 where definately in good working order.
I have tried 2 different Engine bay air temp sensors
And have confirmed that the engine bay fan is in working order.
I have also checked on 2 out of the three alternators that they are putting 14v+ into the battery when the engine is running.....
I havent got the dash 'check' light on so dont think I can use the Diag option
Any further help suggestions greatly appreciated
This might be a silly suggestion but have you checked all the earths are good? And have you measured the voltage across the battery at all, esp. running? Could be a broken wire rather than a faulty item.
Given that either the fan circuit or alternator circuit are both responsible for lighting those dash lights (normal), you need to establish which component is reporting the fault, so if you unplug the alternator and the lights still light up with ignition on then it is definately on your fan circuit side, if the lights go out with alt unplugged then it is an alternator issue of some sort.
Can I still pull codes even though I dont have the 'CHECK' light illuminated?
Paul - I will try eliminating either or, by unplugging the 3 pin plug on the Alternator... Thanks
The number of flashes of the check light is what gives you the codes. So if it's not illuminating then you'll need an auxillary diagnostics tester.
But then I'd also be asking why the light does not illuminate too...
