Mk1 Mr2 20 valve Silvertop.

Post by Alteran »

Hello everyone,

I've finally finished all the work on my beautiful Mk1 Mr2 Silvertop 20valve conversion. This is the result of months of hard graft and sweat! Recently re-sprayed in standard 3E5 Toyota Super Red 2 following an exhausting body restoration. I work as a technician in a large VW dealership and carried out all the work myself. I consider myself as quite particular so all the work has been carried out to my normal high standard. I've cut out every piece of rust and welded in new panels including both rear inner arches and the six piece repair panels for the outer rear arches. The front wings were removed and salvaged, completely rubbed down of all rot, treated and under sealed. The sills were surprisingly solid. The A pillar posts were dealt with as was the O/S B pillar. The only other corrosion was on the O/S floor pan which I cut out and welded in a new section. Every repair was under sealed so the body will be great for years to come. This car is now completely solid. I also replaced the front bumper bar as it had practically vanished due to corrosion! This was the same for the original radiator which i also replaced. All the bolts that annoyingly sheared off were drilled, tapped and replaced, that in itself took two days to finish!

I will try and keep this short but this is how I obtained the engine... I bought a White Mr2 cheap with the 20 valve 4AGE fitted. The body was so badly corroded that I decided that swapping the engine into a reasonable shell was the answer. I found this Red Mr2 with a bu88ered engine but a half decent shell so this was the donor. The previous owner of the White Mr2 covered approximately 3k miles before I bought it. The 20 valve engine had covered 87k when installed so it's done roughly 90k. I have no proof of this apart from my word and there is "87k" on the cam cover. I could quite easily lie and say "It's only done 20k" But I like to think of myself as honest! The odometer reads 131k. I have a bill which was paid by the previous owner of the White Mr2 from Fensport for £1774 for the conversion which included a new clutch. The engine is smooth and smoke/rattle free and pulls all the way to around 7500rpm. I'm no boy racer though and do not thrash it!

I checked over the rest of the car with a fine tooth comb ready for an MOT. I replaced the rear pads and discs and fitted braided flexi hoses. Changed the brake fluid, oil and filter and thermostat. I have ordered a timing belt from Toyota and that will be fitted before it's sold. The car was sprayed and left our body shop on 2nd of November and looks amazing! The body kit was removed and sprayed separately and I removed every trim so the paint job looked spot on. I purchased all the original looking pinstripes and badges as I wanted the car to look original.

The car now has 12 months Mot 5 and a half months tax and drives beautiful! For those that are unaware, the Silvertop engine produces around 160bhp with 20 valves, VVT on individual throttle bodies which is all in standard Toyota form. Fitted to the Japanese "Levin" which I believe is a Corolla. Revs very high and goes like a rocket!

Very reluctant sale and I would keep this Mr2 until the end but we are moving to Australia next month and she has to go. I've insured it for one month so I can drive it around and make sure everything is ok and christ I am wishing I could afford to ship it out there! It drives awesome and I've never had so many looks, even more so when i had my Mk2 Turbo.

The only thing wrong at the moment is there is a crack in the windscreen. No big deal but I'm only TPFT and don't have windscreen cover. Fully comp should sort this out for someone but It's not in view and I forget it's even cracked sometimes. I will reflect this in the price.

I am ideally looking for £3000 but I'm open for offers. I only have 6 weeks left in this country so please make any sensible offers.

I hope these pictures can be enlarged as they don't really do the car justice. If anyone needs me to email them just ask!

Thanks for your comments guys.

I've noticed some peoples adverts have big pictures that cover the whole page and make their car look great! My piddley little pictures aren't really doing the car justice at all!

I've dropped the price down to £2500 now as I've had no interest at £3k.

Any tips on getting nice big pictures anyone??

Liam.

Thanks Quigonjay those pictures look ten times better. I appreciate what you've done, whatever it was!

Thanks for your comments, It's taken me months to build it all back together. So many times I thought about breaking it for spares. Glad I didn't though in the end.

Oh that is just beautiful. I just bought a mk2 and have exactly the same year and colour mk1 down the garden untaxed and miss driving it, to be honest it's a better drive than the turbo. Seems like a great buy at the price with the 20v fitted.

Thank you for all the kind comments guys.

It's now sold! Went for £2300. The new owner is picking her up tomorrow. I replaced the cambelt and gave it a real good clean today, God it looks awesome! I'm really going to miss it.

I'm sure I'll find one out in Australia, there just isn't anything else that i've driven that compares in my opinion.

Again thank you for the feedback,

Liam.
