Front cooling fans

Post by mister2mk1 »

Hello again!

Sorry for the multi threads!

My car is now at about 98% complete but have these few niggling queries - this one is around the cooling system.

I have had the car running for over 20 minutes and the temp gauge has never budged over the half way mark but the query is the front fans hav'nt kicked in....

How long should it take for the fans to kick in????

thanks

They tend to never kick in

All the long piping and high coolant volume seem to add to the cooling effect.

my engine bay fan will often kick in when im sat still for a while, but the radiator fans can take 20-30 mins even in reasonably warm temperatures. i wouldnt be too worried unless the temperature guage is rising. mine tends to hold perfectly around halfway and never goes above. no matter how long im sat still for.

As system-G will also say, the fans aint really needed in our climate, ive ran without them for ages before. Never once have i heard them kick in when they were fitted.

edit: Engine bay fan kicks in plenty in hot weather.

I think I might have a problem with the engine bay fan - is this fused/relay'ed??

Not sure but you can test to see if it works by disconnecting the white round plug located at the back of the engine bay and turning the engine on.

I have just been out in the garage and disconnected the white round plug that runs from the fan - started engine fan not working....

Where to go from here???

Do you have the mk1 mr2 manual, it tells you in there how to test the motor and relay?

You can download it from here....

Pull the temp switch plug off the rad with the engine running and the fans should come on, this will test everything on the car bar the switch, if they come on with the plug off but not when the engine gets v hot then its new switch time.

If they don't come on with the plug off then there is a problem elsewhere on the car.
