[Mk2] [Turbo] Front End DOWN FORCE!!!!

Post by gtr2 »

I don't know if this has been covered here already (tried the search option but no luck) I have a MRD Modena front bumper and 18" rims on my Rev 4 Turbo, looks great but unfortunetley not very stable at high speeds!

I have read a couple of threads on this topic on other web sites but was wondering if any1 has dealt with this issue here?

I guess what I'm after is a front splitter to go on the MRD bumper to creat some down force???

Over to the GURU'S? :thumleft:

It won't be a lack of downforce that is your issue.

I'd get a 4wheel align done and check for any play in your steering rack and suspension bushes :thumleft:

Down Force

Post by gtr2 »

I had the wheels fitted from Elite in Essex and after they fitted the wheels they carried out a four wheel lazer alighnment. I haven't noticed any play in the steering rack but will definetly get it up on a ramp to check. The suspension bushes, well I wanted to go for Poly bushes anyway so I guess I have an excuse now...

Thanks for your reply :thumleft:

ive got some vented arches that are ready to go on my car there supposed to allow the air to pass out of the arches so that you get less front end lift.

another thing you could go for would be a border bonnet as that also allows any air that would get trapped in the bulkhead to pass out and pushes down on the bonnet.

its not something i have done you can buy these, i think you can get them off ben from carbenfibercreations. thats a pic of what i have, there not my actual ones either but are the same.

hopefully someone will confirm what ive said as im no specialist or anything but i know the mr2s suffer from lift as alot of air gets traped in the arches etc and as their is no weight at the front it lifts the car a bit making it unstable.

these just allow the air to pass through the arch rather than getting cought arround the wheel.

as mentioned front end lift is what needs reducing rather than trying to increace downforce.

again as mentioned, a vented bonnet will help relieve air pressure between the bumper and frunk bulkhead and vented arched will help relieve air pressure build up in the wheel wells.

i cant remember when they got included whether at the rev3 point or rev5 toyota added little wind deflector strips to the lead edge of the front wheel arches to help deflect air around the wheel well, this has been noted to help reduce lift on stock mk2 mr2's

What speeds are we talking here?

I find it very hard to believe your getting lift - toyota would have tested and tested the car and i would imagine would never release a car that had issues like that.

I have done 170mph on std bonnet, wings, aero pack (at ten of the best) and the car felt as stable as it does at 60mph.

The angle of the bonnet will naturally produce downforce at higher speeds.

Unless your aftermarket front bumper is badly designed enough to cause lift i'd be looking elsewhere to solve you stability problems.

I can't argue with that but I have had 3 MR2's now, 2 Tubby's and 1 N/A and all suffered from the same problem, a Light front end at high speeds (nothing like 170MPH  ) only one of which has an aftermarket front end (MRD's Modena front bumper) the other 2 had standard front ends...

I must admit I do like the look of these arches :) never been a big fan of Bonnet scoops on an MR2...

Any1 have any pic's with these arches on thier car?

Keep the posts coming though guys :thumleft:

cant really say if they reduce lift. ive had the car 6 yearsish and it did feal very light at the front when i got it. and now it doesnt.. but thats probably because ive got used to the car now.

you would have to remove the arch for them to make any difference.
