[Mk2] [Turbo] Aerodynamics

Post by Ruishy1 »

Has anyone got a functional front splitter ?
or rear diffuser on there car ?

this was the next thing i wanted to make up, maybe use the diffuser from a bugeye subaru and mod it.

The rear diffuser argument has been wheeled out quite a lot on here and the general consensus is that it's pointless as the underside of the car is not flat and the undertrays function to suck air into the engine bay from underneath.

the underside doesnt need to be flat for a diffuser to work, it will improve the airflow with a smooth underside though.
A diffuser in theory should complement a front splitter, offering more grip and handling.

Was hoping someone had done something similar before

Change the suspension, lower the car and get some sticky ar5ed tyres... far better than trying to rely on wind to make you stick to the road !!

i would have thought mounting something like this would be complicates due to the exhaust layout on the mr2, also there is a lot of air disruption where the engine bay is due to the undertrays directing air into the engine bay.

would be interested to see a like for like with/without comparison

if everyone thought like that, we would never have developed flight, you would be amazed the power that air has mate, especially since im in the aircraft industry :)

Mechanical grip will give you more grip all the time, downforce will only give you more grip at the right speeds, which are normally pretty high (which im sure you know), so are you building a MR2 race car?

not a race car, it will be used for road, track drag etc,, the car will be getting sticky rubber and handling sorted, but every little helps :)

That diffuser is a tad expensive, a bit overkill for me, il need to have a look at mounting points and spaces to see what i could make/modify to fit.

the front spliter is easy enough to make up, but in conjuction with a rear diffuser, will really help

I have seen a rx7 aftermarker rear diffuser fitted to an mr2, it looked ok actually, he had to hack it up because of his exhuast and i think this killed the function of it to be honest, he also removed all the under covers and installed flat aluminium sheets all the way back.

I quite fancied it myself

the greddy is more of a lip than a spliter, as a splitter has to extend under the car a certain amount, eg to the front bulkhead :)

i would need to do some research, but if nothing but air can lift over 500 tons of a380 and cargo, im sure there are benifits to be had 8)

some quite good discusions about this sort of thing on the pistonheads aerodynamics section, not mr2 specific obviously but should give you some ideas
also an aerodynamics section on mr2oc.com

I'm in the process of having a diffuser custom made and fitted. Will post up some pictures when I get the car back in around 3 weeks time :thumleft:

Not sure yet if it's helping with the back end downforce but it looks good

Custom made by Luke at Pacific Works. I can't give an exact price but it was less than £500.

Is it possible to seal up the underside and re-route the exhausts through the rear bumper, allowing a proper diffuser to be fitted, and flat sheet under trays.

Also would you be able to provide sufficient cooling to the engine.
