thinking of trying build an engine bay rack tomorrow as when i keep going camping i run out of room for stuff (not a light camper)
its either build a rack up or start looking at a bigger car
anyone done this or is it not ideal?

Re: engine bay roof rack
there was a thread about some rare red mr2 with a roof rack spotted in brum
It looked bad was an overstatement.
Could try buying some of that tire goo from halfords and rid the spare wheel

Re: engine bay roof rack
there was a post a couple of months ago, some guy built a frame to hold a storage box over the engine bay, looked to have done a very good job too.

Re: engine bay roof rack
think the guy used or made bolt holes around the inspection panel compartments, then hooked the bucket about 2 foot above the engine cover

Yeah, its at the depot cos I missed them. Called them and said I would pick it up on sat, gona have to drive the 2 down with no engine lid on and fit it there
As for that roof rack
It was indeed four steel pipes on a frame through the inspection panels, looked like it was a bog standard halfords roof box, with the frame top designed around that and the supports... who knows where they were attached.
A simple gues would be that he either welded it straight to four points in the engine bay (more likely considering the stupidity of even contemplating it)
or he made and welded four mounting points of a larger diameter tube and just slotted the frame in from the top, drill through each point and put a smooth bolt with a pin on the end, much like axel stand design.
Take into account that if its windy you may find the front unstable and you need to consider what material you will make the frame from. Steel is gona weigh abit and be hard to get on and off without help.
If i were you... go pick up a buy and sell. Find anything like a cavileer or astra or an escort with mot and tax for under £500 (not hard) and keep you two how it should be
You could even get a camry... when your done have the engine
Re: engine bay roof rack
wow thats got some serious storage space was thinking more something like this though tbh
then fixing it from around the edges of the engine lid

that didn't takle long, good effort
Re: engine bay roof rack
if i could find something make the feet out of id think about making a few of these lol
costly though, must have cost about 80 quid all in
it clamps though the engine bay grills via a bracket, with foam tape to stop it from rattling / scratching
going give it a motorway test today bham and back

Re: engine bay roof rack

Found this, Says it for MR2
http://www.autolinkmx5.com/boot--luggag ... m-47-p.asp
Aftermarket item, made in England, easy to fit and remove. Note this will NOT fit mk3 MX-5's (2005 on) or cars with a rear spoiler. It clamps on the side edges of the boot lid and has rubber feet to protect the paintwork. Width (side to side) 89cm, depth (front to rear between feet) 45cm (rack itself 38cm), height (above boot lid) 10cm.
This will also fit other cars, such as BMW Z3, Triumph TR, Fiat Barchetta, Morris Minor, Toyota MR2, Porsche 944 convertible, Smart Roadster, etc.

not lying flat but i cant see no reason why if you make one ya cant sit the tires between the bars and weld support each side to hold the upright
weight might be a problem as its resting on the engine lid
the stuff i need carry is all very light
tent- and rucksack with cloths soi not going be tremendous weight
thanks for that link the fittings kit is just what i need for next time will make the feet 100x better

Re: engine bay roof rack
why do people always fit boot racks the wrong way round? The raised bar is not to stop stuff falling off the back of the car under acceleration, its to stop stuff sliding forewards under braking (a much more violent force)...

fit a couple of brackets onto the spoiler at an angle for a bit of extra downforce? lol
