[Mk2] [NA] Engine dying???

Post by philsew »

Hello, I have a 94 n/a that seems to be having problems. I've just given it a full service and had the radiator changed and everything seems to be fine. However, the car seems to struggle up hill or setting off and doesn't have much power. Also after driving for a bit the engine gets really hot and starts to smell like melting metal...

Any help would be fantastic!!!

When you say the engine is getting hot, do you mean its overheating? Have you checked the distributor cap for any water ingress as this is a common cause? Any noticeable oil leaks? Whats the mileage?

The car's not overheating, and i'll check the distributer, the car done 104,000 miles and there's no oil leaks..

Nah, the clutch seems to be fine, good biting point and quick change, besides the engine doesn't seem that responsive, it's almost as if it's struggling to breath. However, the airfilter is clear...

:eye:

not too expensive, you could get rid of the cat completely and go for a de-cat, or stick a wanted post up on here :thumleft: obviously make sure it is the problem first, but from your description id be very suprised if it wasnt the cat

If you have a friendly MOT station, then if it is the cat, just junk it and get a decat pipe (cheap).

Does sound like the cat has got all clogged and broken up.
