Track / Width

Post by SteveM »

Can anyone tell me if the front track of the MK1 is wider than the rear? I've just fitted some new wheels (7x15 et38) and the fronts look like they stick out towards the wheel arch slightly more than the rears. It's not a problem as they're still inside the arches it's just not something I'd noticed before with the standard wheels? Steve :)

Thanks for that Jimi. Maybe it's an optical illusion! :?

What is going on with camber & toe? This could give a visual appearance of what you describe.

That's a good point but the car is off the road (sorned) at the moment so I can't take it anywhere to have this checked. Is there any way I check either of these (just roughly) at home?

Easiest way for toe is to box it off with string about 150mm away from the center of each wheel and then measure the distance from each side of the alloy (front & rear) to the string and measure the amount of difference.

Camber is more difficult. A camber gauge would be needed. Bill Hulme has a "how to" somewhere on checking this and making a camber gauge.

Thanks for that :) I think if anything it's a camber issue as I was forgetting the struts have all been off over the winter and lowering springs fitted so all the settings will be out anyway

If you've put on 7x15s all round the visual difference will be in that the standard set are a staggered set up 6" front and 7" rear, 45 offset all round. Fit 12mm hubcentric spacers to the new rears and it'll look right again.
