Removal Of Decals

Post by mister2mk1 »

Another thick question!!

Can anyone recommend a really easy solution to removing old decals and pin stripes........

My car will shortly be leaving for its respray and I want to make sure its right. I am sure the paint sprayer could and would do this but being a bit of a perfectionist I would prefer that I remove and prep as much as possible....

Any/all help greatfully received.........

Thanks

Gently heat them up with a heat / hot air gun then remove them by hand

A heat gun is one way but can risk burning your paint. Thats what its main function is to strip paint.

your much better off with something like this 500w Halogen site light

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/11281/Lig ... Site-Light

they give off a large amount of heat and is enough to warm the panel and the decal to enable you safely remove it without damaging the paint beneath.

Great for when your waxing your car too as it just softens it into the warmed panel and aids the setting/outgassing time too.

Heat Gun?

Just use a hairdryer - I have removed a number of decals of the years with one of these.

some heat is the best way. but getting the strips off is the easy bit all the gooey mess they leave behind is much harder to remove.

A light rub with acetone (nail varnish remover) will remove goo. :thumleft:

Hairdyers don t get hot enough, if decals come off with a hairdryer, then chances are they would just peel off with your fingers anyway..

Best way I have found, is using yours Mrs's/ Mums Iron and a bit of rag to stop you getting the iron all covered in bits of car, gets hot enough to soften the glue without killing the paint :thumleft:

Yes they do :oldtongue:

Well all our old decals on our mk1a came off fine with a hairdryer :thumleft:
Then, as ToniG said: nailvarnish remover works a treat for removign the gunge, without taking off the paint.

Another option is a "caramel wheel' wot goes on the end of a drill.

My first choice would be a trusty heat-gun though.

Hairdriers are a bit pants and your mum gets pi$$ed off when you burn them out. Never happened to me. No sir

heat gun, as mentioned may get the paint too hot if you're not uber careful.
make sure its a good hairdryer - not a crap little one thats no better than a warm summer breeze - thats the trick :thumleft:
