Hello everyone… please HELPS!!

Having done 1000+ miles since MOTed, the mk1a black is still going strong, and everything were ok…

Until this afternoon; return from Leicester… I noticed that having problem and with difficult to select 3rd gear… and then occasionally it started having crunching noises while changing to 3rd, but is hit and miss... so I continue to drive as normal… not long after half way home; it was popped out in 3rd after selected  !!!

But the time I got back home; the gear box just won’t having it… where is my 3rd gear...? the weird thing is tht; I can select any gears, apart from 3rd!!! (How’s weird… normally is a 5th…!) :?

*) How this could happen? Engine and gearbox was replaced before according from the previous owner… (oh, is a red top TVIS on mk1a)

*) So, is this means I got mk1b engine and gear box as well?

*) Where I can check the gear box oil?

*) Is the gear box housing as the same on mk1a and mk1b box?

*) What is the differs, and how can I tell…?

*) finally; Can anyone recommend a good reputable Gear box specialist?

Please Helps!!

Thanks you

First of all check the linkages, it could be the linkages are caught or not clipped down, but if all is fine then it looks likely it is the box.

You can get your gearbox rebuilt, but at a cost of £300+ (not including removal and refit fees) is an expensive option, but at least you know what you get then

A good used box will cost £50-100. But there will be no guarentee on it.

Mk1a and mk1b gearboxs fit, the difference is the mk1b gearboxs have 2 starter motor humps (one either side of the engine), not real difference to fitment.

If your changing the gearbox, change the clutch at the same time, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

I've seen some of the race MR2's lose 3rd, it appears your car may have had too many traffic light GPs!

Picked up a used gear box (mk1b) all the way from doncaster on sunday night. £80 with 1 mth guarentee on it!!

Booked garage on thurday to do the job, as u said before; need to check the condition of the clutch, my local garage test drive the car and it seem to be ok (strong good grip), but the 3rd gear is F#@K!!...

anyway, its best to open it and check the clutch, will find out on thurday afternoon!

 everythg will be fine.

This happened to me on my old Swift GTi, but it was second gear. It was hard to select, crunching and kept popping out of gear when changing down. Then eventually it completely went, I could get it into second but only by holding it there, and when I did this it made a dirty grinding noise. I drove it around without second gear for a while and then found a new one in a scrappy. Fitted it but all the ratios are wrong :( It wasnt a GTi box. I took the old gearbox apart and the syncros on second and third were very worn down. Still have the car and am always looking for another GTi box. But these cars are super rare these days and their gearboxes are even rarer!

Bubbles, the new box should sort your problem. I would agree with cartledge and say go ahead and replace the clutch at the same. It will save you having to take it to a garage again when it needs doing and clutches are easy to find on ebay etc.

Try the 16vminiclub. G13B's are a favourite conversion into minis these days, and lots of the guys use (I think) a Vauxhall box - meaning there may be GTi boxes knocking around.
