Had a run in with a Golf the other night.
Not sure exactly what it was, only saw it from the back!
Didnt have a GTI badge or any markings on back, but it was the newer model.
Cutting a long story short, he floored it away from me at a junction, catching me off guard, I struggled to catch him!
Once I caught him, I was stuck to his bumper, and had to back off a little, but I was shocked how quick it was . I had to really push it, on full boost to keep up!
A GTI???? Looking at stats I should have done better. An R32??? Dont know anything about them?
Do I have a problem?

Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
depends what the golf was pushing out for power although they are quite a heavy car. did it sound like a v6? They do sound nice but there is no way i would have one....bloody boring. would rather have your turbo anyday!
Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
You should have still beaten a R32 let alone a GTI.
You've got similar mods to me so maybe it was a bit of a sleeper with some extre goodies underneath?

my mates got an Edition 30 GTI and it's been remapped and now it's putting out 300fwhp. Loads of torque too

That souds possible! I would say I WAS quicker, but didnt get a massive chance to put it to the test, as i was caught off guard! But there didnt seem much in it!

It could have been anything tbh mate.
Standard Mk5 Golf GTi is around 200bhp
Standard Mk5 R32 is about 265bhp IIRC
Neither of them will get you a sub 6 second 0-60
But then the engine in the GTi is essentially the same as in all the VAG turbo cars which have plenty of modding potential.
I've even seen a twin turbo'd V6 engine (vid clip) in a mk2 or 3 Golf before.

Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
a friend of mine had a mk5 r32 in silver, went to amd for some work came out with there r300 conversion 300bhp fly and sounded like a f430 lol
Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
That's a big power gain for an NA, what did they do?
Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
no idea il find out lol
from memorie
full exhaust
cams
filter
remap
what ever it was it cost just over 5k fitted i think from amd, only had 5000 miles on it when he tuned it and then sold it for a loss with all mods on 8k lol, had some kind of special electronic diff with a little cabin mounted box which would let u split the ratios to like 40/60 ect
sat on the rear bumper of a fairly tuned rx7 round our test track

I reckon it would be quite a lot of head work and wild cam profiles to get that much of a gain. Bet it sounded mental!

yes my friend it did!!! great sounding engine with a bit of work to it
Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
I'd imagine most V6's with headwork, manifolds, cams and exhaust(s) sound mad.
Did it sound a bit dirty on tick over, almost like it was struggling for idle? Then go ballistic and rev to about 8k?

tick over sounded fine a little lumpy but nothing to stress about and yes it flew right round to 8kish iirc
Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
Nice! Proper tuning that. I do like turbo's but it's so much easier to get power out of them by just sticking a great big turbo on them.
Getting it out of an NA is more about skill.

Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
lot of cash for an extra 50bhp and suspension upgrade to be honest but i'd imagine would sound awesome on full chat

Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
My mate has just bought a 2008 R32. Whilst it's a nice new car and certainly corners very well indeed, I just wasn't impressed with it's acceleration. It simply could not push you into the seat like a Tubby can. I like the car but I think he could have done much better with the money he spent on it....
Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
2008 - bet that set him back a few quid!
I think the push back factor in tubbies is brought on a bit by turbo lag as the power just suddenly hits you in a wave.
The V6 R32 will be much smoother through the range.
And I would imagine the weight of the R32 means the power to weight is lacking?

Re: Mr2 and Golf R32/GTI?
the thing with the GTI's is that usually if people are willing to boot it and go up against other quick cars its because they have had some goodies under the bonnet! its the same with the audi A3/S3's, seat leon's etc etc.....they have a lot of tuning potential!!!
Personally i think the V6 nowadays is a bit of a waste: heavy, poor economy...and considering how tuneable the 1.8T/2.0T engines are, if your wanting a bit of extra power, they are the ones to go for! a remap alone will see you p1$$ing on an R32 and more than likely IMPROVE your economy!!
